I arrived in Martigny mid-afternoon after a fairly straightforward 4.5 hour stroll from Saint-Marice, where I spent a lovely evening with the Augustian community at their abbey in the town. Its claim to fame is that it is the oldest continuously functioning abbey in the western world, having been founded in 515AD. The basilica has had to be rebuilt a few times owing to rockfalls from the mountain behind it, but I was reassured that it ...

... by for another rescue mission.

Anyhow, back to today. I walked along the lake shore for 7 hours to get here. It started in the rain and it remained quite gloomy even after it stopped. Above me on the hillside were terraced vineyards that surprised me a little as I didn't know the Swiss went in for wine-making. A brief stop in the rain lifted our spirits and we went playing in puddles. Unfortunately, while in the middle of a huge puddle, I discovered a submerged edge, which suddenly sent my bike sideways and ...

... and all his cronies, along with some major WWII players took the same lift? The view from the top is spectacular ... looking down into lush green forests and meadows, and wonderfully blue lakes. Breathtaking ... shame he didn't take a tumble while climbing around the craggy rock areas towards the back of the ridge, although having said that, he didn't visit that often, as the poor fella was terrified of heights! We didn't fall either, but had great fun climbing them! Next ...
