    Nanda

The girl in the middle is Nanda. The first time I attempted to teach Nanda, she wouldn't say a word. I didn't know if she understood anything or not - probably not, because she wouldn't write anything down, wouldn't be able to answer my questions, wouldn't do anything she was told. Her only classmate, Michael, was also a really bright kid, and I guess the class was more suitable for Michael's pace than for hers. She was so little and timid though, I couldn't ...

    Lampuuk Beach

Shortly after arriving in Aceh, I was having an online conversation with a friend back home, who said that one of his favourite things to do was to chill out at the beach with a guitar. Mmm, that sounded like a good idea. At that point I was still in the midst of getting used to everything here at the volunteers' center - sharing a room with three others, sharing a house with more than ten others, being the only Christian around, ...

    All of Bali (sorry!!!!)

A travel blog entry by charlottec9 on Jul 25, 2015

... an anxiety attack because of the ocean. It took me maybe 10 minutes to get back onto shore, especially because I don't think I was thinking straight due to panic. The waves kept crashing on me and there was coral at the bottom which I was trying not to step on, which in the end didn't work when I got to the shallow ends. The currents were so strong I could barely move, and the flippers on my feet were preventing me from propelling myself forward or gaining balance. Overall ...

    Nurul Update + Bank Woes

A few days ago, I discovered that the girl I wrote about on my first day here, Nurul, comes from a poor family that occasionally doesn't even have enough to eat. Our IHF center recently managed to get her sponsorship request up on the website, so my friends and I got together to sponsor her education for US$10 a month = $120 a year. But apparently she's also wayyy behind in her class; she's third grade but somehow can't even read ...

    From Kuta to Seminyak.

We only stayed the one night in Kuta so before our driver Harry arrived, Star and I sat by the pool while Nik went for a run down to the beach (where she met some random monkeys). Harry was unusually late and when he arrived he was quieter than usual. Possibly because he'd been up super early for a religious holiday celebration that started at 3am. We went straight from the hotel to our new hotel in Seminyak. We stayed at the Seminyak Village, ...
