A Wonderland for Walkers

... friendly streets.

When most people think of Nuremberg, they think of the trials. Unfortunately we were unable to visit Courtroom 600 because the trial memorial isn’t going to be finished until 2010, but also because the room is still used for proceedings to this day. Instead, on our first day, we walked through the town’s squares, saw a religious demonstration and debate that was even more ...

... or visa versa. We got to go though the house to see how they lived back in their day. At the end of the tour, we were taken to the workshop and shown which elements made certain colors, then got to watch a demonstration of a lady making art.

After the tour of the house, we hurried to the toy museum that was just down the street. We had less than an hour to explore the 4 floor museum, but we ended up making the time stretch as long as we could, goofing off every chance we got (we ...

A Quiet Sunday

... and took buses to Nuremberg. We visited the Zeppelin Field where the big Nazi Rallies were held and the Hall of Justice where the Nuremberg Trials took place. Bought a souvenir pin at Market Square and had cokes at a bistro while waiting for the bus to take us back to the ship.

Go Icetigers Go!

... the game. First of all, the germans know how to cheer!!! An arena seating maybe 10000 with more cheering then a Habs game! Each player was announced and all the fans chanted their last name! They had intricate drumming and clapping cheers! It was really fun to get into even though we couldn’t always follow or understand! By the end we were swinging our scarves around and shouting the players names ...

I'm tired of train travel

... They were only 24 Euros per night, which is about what I’d pay in a hostel.

Anyway, I was really exhausted for some reason when we got to the rooms. And I stretched out on my bed to try and rest for a little while. But Derek was excited to see the town and decided to go explore on his own after only 10 minutes. Rothenburg is one of the best preserved medieval cities with its town walls still intact and many historic half-timbered buildings.

I didn’t ...

Nuremburg, briefly.

... of the sham-wow guy. The square had a very ornate church and a gold covered fountain called Schoner Brunnen.

Next we walked up to Nuremberg Castle, the Kaiserburg, and of course it was on top of the tallest hill around. It was very picturesque, and we took plenty. We payed to climb up the tallest tower, and it had a very unigue spiral staircase inside, people back then really knew how to build things to last, and with just basic materials. It offered ...

... checked in we walked to the nearby square. This is dedicated to Albrecht Durer the 16th century artist and his house, now a museum, was on one side. There were some lovely old wooden and daub buildings and several great cafes. There was also a statue of a rabbit in the Durer style. We then walked to the main market square where the market was just closing. Here there is a beautiful 14th century fountain with 40 different figures on ...

Leaving Nuremberg

The omens for the trip were not magnificent: the sky looked grey, we had to get up early and as always there was some stress. For once our trip was not really planned. Yes, we knew where we would stay the first night and I also knew I wanted to visit some friends I hadn't seen in 20 years. But all the rest would be handled when we got there. First scheduled stop on our trip was Regensburg. I could not remember if I had ever been there, and ...

Guten Tag from Nuremberg

... the haze and as we approached I saw the mountains poking out through the mist and below that there was the wonderful beaches, I just wish I could have had a few days in Palma. I flew out of Palma and straight up to Nuremberg and arrived about midnight, I walked out of the passenger area and met up with my cousin Ingo who I had not seen in 5 or so years and his wife Parichat. It felt so good to see their faces after a long day and know that I have somewhere to sleep and a way to ...
