East Side Gallery

A travel blog entry by steveandjanna

The first thing that we did in Berlin was visit the East Side Gallery. The gallery is comprised of the longest surviving stretch of the Berlin Wall that is still standing. When the wall fell, this portion was saved and left standing. Local and international artists were then invited to paint murals along the 1.3 km length, making this the largest …

Day 10 Early start due to 9.30 flight and the inconsiderate f..kers in the hotel hallway creating a racket first thing. Went down and persevered the awful hotel breaky, before managing to talk our hotel desk man into a slightly early shuttle bus trip to the airport - only minor victory of our Ciampino stay. Then flew to Berlin with a ridiculously …

... the borders were heavily barricaded during the Cold War and was the checking centre to allow people to enter through to the east or west borders .  We had a look through the display which displayed the history of the wall and the struggles people had escaping from east to west Germany.  We then walked to Branden burg gate - which wasn't too far away - this was truly amazing that this gate has still existed. There were people everywhere. Ben and Kaya left us at ...

... supermarket again then decide to cook tea in tonight. We wake up on Wednesday feeling refreshed and have our showers and get ready. We go downstairs and get lunch at the restaurant next door then get a train out to another area to have a shop around. We find in one area they have set up a man made snow slope. It looks fun but we are both too cold and have too many bags to go on. We find a shopping centre and have a look around. We find ourselves feeling pretty lazy at this point of ...

I'm a little embarrassed to say I don't think I've ever owned a history book, per se. I suppose it depends on what you class as 'history'. My viewpoint of the subject was soured during school years. We covered the Battle of Hastings in 1066 and all that but it wasn't a subject that instantly blew me away. Besides, having a topic forcibly ...

    Excellent hotel in Berlin 'Mitte'

I just returned from a 4 night's stay at DERAG HOTEL GROOSER KURFUERST and this hotel

    Excellent stay at Grooser Kurfuerst

Excellent peaceful hotel but close to centre. Tube station ( Markisches Museum) literally 1 minute walk away but Cathedral end of Unter dem Linden, the Old Quarter and Museumsinsel all within 5 min walk. Lots of places to eat at Nikolaivertel, 5 mins on foot, also ate in hotel on wet evening- food and service excellent.

    Excellent 4 star hotel

I stayed at the hotel from 5 to 11/1/2006 and can only confirm the previous reviews. Excellent 4 star hotel, clean and well kept. Friendly staff, perfect breakfast with all kinds of meats, eggs and yoghurts etc. Nice rooms, and spotless bathroom. Perfect location for sightseeing, with a metrostation at 30 mtrs of the entrance/hotel and in walking distance of Nikolaiviertel (with lots of restaurants) and Unter den Linden. We paid 130 euro for a double and got a 4 + 2free arrangement.

    Highly recommended

I stayed here for a week and found it excellent in every way. It fully deserves its four star rating. Because I was arriving early in the morning direct from New Zealand, I emailed the hotel in advance to ask for an early check-in. They replied immediately and when I got here thay had not only remembered but also gave me a room upgrade.

    Great Hotel, worth every penny

Stayed at this hotel first week in December. It is a good quality hotel with excellent facilities. Rooms were a good size and had everything you'd expect from a 4 star hotel. Access to the Undergound rail system is, quite literally, right on the doorstep. Good buffet breakfast but it did get very busy on the weekend. Staff were friendly & efficient and spoke good English. The area was a bit quiet at night but with such good Underground rail access you can get anywhere in no time flat. It's only a short walk (10 minutes) to Alexanderplatz where there is nightlife. I'd have no hesitation in recommending this hotel to family and friends.

    Great Little Hotel!

This hotel is a fine example of what a four star hotel should be. It is spotlessly clean, the staff is friendly and very helpful and it is only a few feet from a U-Bahn stop. The rooms are modern and nicely furnished. The bathrooms are spotless with up-to-date fixtures and plenty of space!

Breakfast was a typical German buffet with eggs, cheeses and meats, breads, cereals, yoghurts, etc.

The neighboorhood is mainly residential but you are right next to a branch of the Spree River and only a few blocks from many attractions and restaurants. There are several restaurants within a block of the hotel and museum Island is just out the door and across the bridge (maybe a thirty second walk).

I stayed here for a weekend sightseeing trip to Berlin. This hotel is an absolute perfect location--right in the heart of the Mitte district--and there is a U-Bahn station literally right across the street (its called Märkisches Museum). The staff members were very friendly and professional, and went out of their way to make sure my stay was an enjoyable one (also, they all spoke English very well). The free breakfast was very generous and had lots of varieties of breads, meats, cheeses, and eggs. The steam and sauna rooms were very nice as well. The hotel is very clean and well lit, and I felt very secure staying there. I highly recommend this hotel--it certainly deserves its four star rating!

    Good Hotel at Good Price

Rooms were large and spacious. Breakfast was excellent, however, had to wait for a table as hotel was quiet busy. Location was good, right next to underground station, and within walking distance of most attractions in the east of the city. Staff were friendly and attentive. Biggest drawback was that hotel restaurant was closed over xmas period.

Good Hotel, Great Public Transport Access

I was there in late Sept. '04.

The Hotel is not large but is extremely clean and well managed. The Fruhstuck(breakfast) buffet is excellent.

Best thing is the U-bahn station located no more than 20 meters from the front door, and the view rooms looking out into the Spree River canal over the Fisher Insel.

You can be anywhere you want to go in Berlin in just minutes from this locale, but if walking is your bag you may want to pick one a little closer to Unter den Linden or Friedrichstrasse. I would stay at this Hotel again for either business or pleasure.

Nice Accommodations at the Grosser Kurfurst

Just returned from a thoroughly enjoyable visit to Berlin. Stayed at the Grosser Kurfurst which was very nice. Big, comfortable rooms and spacious bathrooms. Good continental breakfast included in the price. A bit out of the way but directly across the street from the Markisches Museum U2 station and a few blocks from Nikolaivirtel. A great value for about 115 euros a night.
