We had things to do today so got up nice and early. Actually made it up in time for our first hostel supplied breakfast, despite them being on offer for the last week or so. First stop was to Viña del Mar for the morning. We hopped on a bus and hoped it would take us there. Turns out it did and we found Viña del Mar was much more touristy and it had a much safer feel to the place, which is always welcome for two solo travelling kiwis. Funnily enough we went to ...

      Day 3

... into the lounge where we met this British chap who has travelled South America 3 time already! Staying this time for 9 months! I'm very jealous! Much later I saw the previous threesome from before in the dining area and scored a free feed - a DELICIOUS chilean dish: a pollo and vegetable stew? Tasted just like mums stew and was just too good. I also scored a free espanol lesson. These people were very funny, smart and multi-lingual! While doing the dishes we met a ...

... tarp, to buy veggies to go with the crab for dinner.  And strawberries, of course. It is a warm day in Valparaiso.  Bright blue skies. The city shows off very well on a day like today.  The ice-cream store on the hill sells some GF varieties and we're all happy.  Janak has told us about a bookstore which has used, English books.  We make the trip down the hill, stock up, and find the funicular for the ride back up. This is our last day ...

The next day we walked down to one of the ascensores, for the descent to sea level. At the time of writing only 8 of the 15 ascensores are working. These are like a cable car that takes you down a very steep decline. The one for Cerro (hill) we are staying on, Playa Ancha, cost 300 pesos for the trip down or up. We have now been on 6 different ascensores, most only cost ...

... The country and the people, we have really enjoyed it - on the other hand in central Chile there is not so much new to discover. The Atacama Desert in the north would certainly have been worth a visit, but we would have to fly there as an extra trip- and of course Patagonia in the south of Chile, but itīs easier to travel on the Argentinean side.

Nevertheless, we can easily imagine to return back one day to Chile :)
