... homesteaders the land free, in return for them developing the land for their own needs. Mary moved her 4 young children into the area, while her husband worked for Alaska Rail and came home once a week. The place they found was a one room shack without electricity, water, windows or a door! Now remember this is in the middle of Alaska where the snow in winter averages 800 inches. ... several false-alarms (mostly rocks), Tammy hollers out, and sure enough, we see a female grizzly and her cub, clearly born this spring, off at a distance foraging among the willows. We are all mesmerized.

The Alaska Range is stunning and remains clearly visible through out the trip west. At Wonder lake we get off the bus for 30 minutes and enjoy the view of the range. Slowly it starts to get the ...

We took the bus into the park again today, with different results than yesterday. On the down side, the wildlife viewing wasn't quite as good as yesterday. We saw one grizzly a long way off, more caribou, but not as close as yesterday, more Dall sheep high up on rocky overlooks, four golden eagles, a few more ptarmigans, some moose, and a few more foxes. On the upside, the weather ...
