... years, some well over 30. The first 30 miles was fairly ordinary, but accompanied by an introductory commentary. Mostly taiga, or northern boreal forest of white and black spruce, aspen, paper birch and balsam poplar. Then, on the dirt road, we travelled up to 2500 feet, onto the treeless tundra, covered with low growing willow and birch, to about mile 65 of the 93. ... the 9 rapids sections. The new "brave for anything" Jean loved it, along with Geoff & James who couldn't stop smiling! Finally got back to Earthsong and Geoff went for a run at 10.30pm - how strange that it's still quite light at this time here. At 5.30 we arrived at Denali train station and were taken by coach to the lodge. It was freezing, but once inside our room with the heater on, we looked out the window at the most amazing site of it snowing on the mountains. We rugged up and took a wander through the resort which is quite spread out. They have lovely gift shops .... I picked out a beautiful Lynx fur coat ...

... Colleen and I treated it like a surprise package but others in the party were unwilling to even try the snacks. Our destination is a view of Mt McKinley..we are lucky again. There is only one road into this place and permits are limited and closely monitored. The road is one way in parts and reminded me of Skippers Canyon in the South Island.
