The area nearby Troodos mountains with magnificent hills and valleys is the home to 9 Byzantine churches, included on UNESCO's Heritage List, and richly decorated with murals and Byzantine paintings.

The first President of the Republic of Cyprus, Archibishop Makarios III, served here as a novice. At his own wish he was buried on the summit of Throni, 3 ...

Happy 6th Birthday to Zak. Caught the shuttle but into town which was a long way from the ship and it was quite hot, so we didn't walk. Had a look at an old Castle but couldn't take photos so decided not to go right inside. Walked up and down and around all the streets. Went down to the waterfront which had a huge park right along it on the other side of the road. No beach; it was all rocks but quite pretty and relaxing. We had lunch in a Greek cafe where the ...

An Unexpected Stop.

... way you enter Cyprus is the way you must leave, otherwise the Republic of Cyprus will consider it illegal.

Talk about political hotbeds. We have just left one and entered another, tourist are just sometimes a porn in their games, when all we want is to just travel freely and see what a country has to offer.

Tomorrow we head to Northern Cyprus in search of sand, oh and an escape route.

Troodos Trouble

Friday, July 3rd,
2009—Troodos and Limassol
On the drive to Limassol we decided to
take the detour through the Troodos mountains in hopes of seeing some
nice scenery and perhaps the painted churches of Troodos.
Unfortunately all we discovered were poorly signed roads and more
winding mountain highway. The ride was spectacular but a little
disappointed once we had reached Troodos. It ...

... Some of the shallow baths had elaborte tile pictures on the bottoms which in their day would have been gorgeous, great attention to detail. We stopped for wine, bread & cheese tasting at a little village in their wine country called Omodos. After that we had a quick look through the shops with their various arts, crafts and jewellery. They specialise in lace work. There was also a ...

... quite new compared to the others, but still nice. The paintings are amazing, but I still don't understand them. The majority of churches are locked up, but there always is St Nikolaos. Simply beautiful the paintingss in there. I saw last year, and once again it reminded me of the churches in Romania. Lucy took a sneaky photo. Oh well, it was her birthday !!! As it got later, we ended up in a little town with another old church ...

... does have a lot business but her customers are not take care as they should. Talking to Richard, I told him that Jayne's time for leaving on her old visa is up February 15. He told me that the government dragged its feet in getting one of his workers (who is from Cuba) his visa and it cost him (meaning Richard) $200. This might happen with Jayne. I think it's deliberate so the government can make an extra $200. What crooks!

... number & we felt happy to drift around the buildings which, although very old, have been 'restored' to within an inch of their lives. It's all pristine & beautifully maintained. Despite being a real tourist spot it is still a working monestary & you do see the monks walking around. The church is spectacular filled with icons, gold & silver and heavy with the smoke of incense. After ...

... the night there, and drive all the way to our residence early the following morning.

Unbelievable what we could see. The fire had reached the last bushes down the sea.

And this trip ends here unexpectedly.

We spent 4 months working on the house, cleaning and having it painted again.

It was a nightmare, but we survived. This incident made us stronger.
