... disoriented as we walked to the Paul Laurence Dunbar house (a poet and high school friend of the Wrights), stumbled into a massive car show at the Carillon Historical Park, and drove all the way across town to see the Huffman Prairie Flying Field. Along the way we caught glimpses of the University of Dayton, Wright State University, and Wright-Patterson Air Force Base. All of it was mildly interesting, and yet nothing stands out.

We stayed one night in Amana, IA, toured and shopped in the Colonies, ate at the Ox Yoke Inn and the Ronneburg Restaurants. Drove across Iowa, Indiana and Illinois. Iowa is third in food production (only topped by Texas and California!) and what amazing farmers we have in the US! The corn belt is GREEN; they must have had lots of rain this year, like we had in Cheyenne. Visiting with our Chadron High classmates, Nona (Burk) and Marvin Chasek ...

There, there are exhibits of the Wright Brother's Bicycle Shop, their printing shop and all kinds of information about the concept, design and eventual flight of the the Wright Flyer 1, at Kittyhawk, North Carolina in 1903. Also, a whole section of the museum was dedicated to Paul Laurence Dunbar, a young black man who went to school with Orville and Wilbur and was involved in writing for their newspapers. ...

... to find Huffman Prairie Field, the world’s first airfield, but were put off when it appeared we needed to enter the Wright Patterson Air Force Base at a main gate to reach it. We subsequently discovered that that is probably the way in! The morning hours were spent touring the museum of the United States Air Force; a huge, four hangared, complex which houses a multitude of aircraft from the very early days of aviation ...

We dedicated one for each meal (breakfast, lunch, dinner) and one for snacky things like s'mores, pudgy pies, etc. We used these storage containers for all non-perishable food items. We planned the first several days of meals and shopped for items needed prior to leaving. As the trip progressed each time we put food in the designated bin in the grocery store parking lots.
