... the city, just off a small canal. Often there would be no one on these little side streets in the middle of the day. Such a relief from the packed in tourist centers. The apartment was spotless and very comfortable.

Our first full day we decided to visit two of the small islands that surround Venice -- Murano and Burano.
Murano is known for glass blowing and we watched as a master plied his trade. In less than 2 minutes he turned ...

... or hotel, or demolished. St Marks Cathedral is as spectacular as ever and we went there (without queueing) during the one hour when they have the lights on during the day. This made such a difference to the mosaics - the entire ceiling and most of the walls are covered with pictures and designs made from small mosaic tiles in gold or glass and the strength of colour of the glass and brightness of the gold are seen at their best with light. There ...

... we wanted to go to Lido, but the water bus to go to Burano came first and we read the time schedule wrong! We thought that it would take us about 15 minutes to Burano, so we can check it out really quick and then leave for Lido. Turns out that the trip to Burano is an hour from Murano and there was no way we can get to Lido with daylight still upon us. We saw the colorful houses in Burano and then left to go back to the ...
