Peace out Santa Rosa... Maybe we'll meet again.

After two nights at Claire's Rob and I packed up the car for the last time in Sonoma County.

Started off our day with breakfast with Claire and Flick. Piner Cafe.. Wish I met you earlier. After I stuffed my face with french toast for the second day in a row. Rob opted for the pancakes. Never in my life have I ever seen a pancake so big. Seriiously it had a 14 inch diameter and was about 2 ...

Full of Salty Goodness!

... it well after 3pm thanks to the numerous wave watching stops.

I carried on up California Highway one and could see why it is called the shoreline highway. The only downside was that I was having to negotiate the tight turns in the fun bus rather than my S3 – had a few 'oooohhhh she-diddly-it moments! The amazing thing was the road was full of cyclists – more two wheels than four despite the tight turns and 1 in 4 ...

Why leave when it's perfect?

Within minutes of arriving at the Beachcomber, I asked myself why not stay over another day and rest up my hands from the exciting switchback excursion. I have to say that despite exercises specifically to keep them in good condition, my hands remain the longsuffering victims of really long or arduous roads. So I did stay over and spent the day ...

Bad start to the day

... grab my wet vest when I got to the next gas station fill-up.
By the time I did that and returned to the bike sitting on the parking lot, the temp was 102. Whoa. I couldn't get to the rte 1 junction with the coastal rte fast enough. Then I had 23 miles of sharp curves the sign said. It was not exaggeration. Could not make time. Switchback deluxe time.
I was delighted as the temp dropped ...

Exhausting Day

... on Route 1 and follow the coast line up visiting all of the small coastal towns. This was a great plan and it was definitely fun for about the first hour or two but after a grueling 5 to 6 hours of what seemed to be over a thousand left and rights turns that boarder lined a case of insanity. Alright enough of my complaining the coast line was very beautiful and all in all we had a great drive up but it was a very long day.

The Inn in the Woods

... they had VoIP, they offered free long distance, too. The wi-fi service was difficult to use at first, but the innkeeper and one of the employees worked with Philip to make sure that he got the service he needed.

We had a great dinner at La Petite Rive the first night that we were in Little River. It's a tiny restaurant with a limited menu, but ...

Avenue of the Giants

... Giants" which is about 100 miles north of Fort Bragg. This stretch of road follows the old Highway 101. It's 31 miles in length with 51,000 acres of Redwood groves. The area is surrounded by Humboldt Redwoods State Parks which has the largest remaining stand of Redwoods in the world. It is just hard to believe the size of the trees we saw on this trek. Walking among them really makes you feel humbled. We made many stops along the way to hike in ...

We meet a european-hater

... Full" on the sign. We drove in anyway and found that they have "walk-ins" - 10 tent sites which you can't reserve. We got a really nice one which was a good size with the beach about 250yd away and set up the tent. We then headed for the town and found out all about its history as a logging town for redwoods. The road outside our motel yesterday was initially a rail track and then later a logging road. There is a huge log outside the guest-house museum that started ...

San Fransisco Day 5 - Haight Ashbury

... be hippies! I had a good look round the vintage/second hand shops but didn't really find anything that was the right style, fit and not too heavy! You can take your clothes into the shops in exchange for some of theirs but I didn't like the idea of lugging clothes round all day. At the end of Haight Ashbury is Golden Gate Park, and as my feet were hurting I decided to sit their for a while. It is a massive park and I only went a little way in - with my shoes off, the ...

Fort Bragg, California

... another explosion, after hours entertainment. Fort Braggs streets are lined with saloons, poker clubs, prostitutes, etc. All compete for the sea urchin dollars. It's like gold rush days, like oil wells suddenly gushing wealth into the sky. After dark, I abandoned Nick at Terry's Bar. I enjoyed a smoked salmon dinner at a nearby restaurant, then explored the streets of Fort Bragg. Late evening, I drifted around a corner to the "Welcome Inn" saloon. I found a seat next ...
