darjeeling to kalimpong

before i start this blog properly i will just note down here - as i'm sure you have all noted already - that this computer doesn't do capital letters. it also doesn't do exclamation marks, so except a 1 as all of that. i have also spent the last hour trying to print out my e-ticket for my flight tomorrow, and look up the ipod prooblems website as this computer had a very bad effect on it when i plugged it in. so this blog is only going to be brief as i was already in a rush...i'm not even goi...

Sausage rolls, Hotty and Cloud Heaven

Dean remembers walking through Darjeeling, as the day he found somewhere on the planet that was just like he imagined it to be. For me Darjeeling had conjured up images of tea plantations, mountain views and an old British outpost with relic Brits included.

We had travelled up from the Indian plains to Darjeeling in an oldish jeep crammed with locals and seemingly businessmen. I lost the feeling in my hips by the time we had got half way. It was a fair squeeze to get Dean, two others,...

Wintery Temperatures & Amazing Views

After a few hot days in Siliguri (see next entry), we headed to Darjeeling for a relief with much cooler temperatures. Just 2.5 hours away Darjeeling is like a different world...a wonderful mountain town with amazing views on India's highest peak, Kanchenjunga . Not many tourists make it here and just for that reason the feeling you get is great...this part of the country feels very remote, the people are extremely laid back and friendly and the Himalayan landscape incredible. Darjeeling is d...

Darjeeling

We've been in and around Darjeeling for nearly 10 days now and it's been nice to get out of the heat. Easy to see why the British needed the Hill Stations of India. The views of the mountains from Darjeeling are great and the world's third highest peak Kanchenjunga dominates the skyline. We went for a trek for 4 days/3 nights that took us to 3600m giving great views of the mountains including Everest in the distance. The trek was a bit harder going than expected - around 15km a day and quite ...

A nice cup of tea in cold Darjeeling

It's really cold! After having a permanent sheen on our faces in hot and sweaty Calcutta, Darjeeling has a decidedly chilly air. We have to change out of our flip flops and cover up in proper shoes and a coat. Darjeeling is a hill town, popular with Indian tourists and about 2000 metres above sea level, nestling amongst beautiful hills. Its famous for its tea, although we've been rather unimpressed by the offerings so far. Perhaps our taste buds just arent sophisticated enough ? There's lots ...

Singalila Ridge Trek - Installment two

... a while longer for Dean to scan the snowy range.<br><br>Until we got to glimpse these views we had been debating a quick retreat down the mountain to the cosiness of Darjeeling, a few days early. Now it was game on. Shall we get going along the ridge then? Yes siree&#8230; it was a 22km day and so we got on the trail once more. Not too fast off the mark to be fair as we all had a bit of camera trigger finger to deal with. As you can see we took a few photographs ...

Another day in darjeeling

... its not how well you speak but how well you are understood. We generally know what they are trying to say. This area has much more of a Tibetan influence given how close we are to Tibet and Bhutan. Many of the markets have items to sale from those countries. The markets are small little stalls, most with a tarp roof and they set up and take down every day. The items are gathered in huge sacks and then a man will tote them on his back with a strap around his forehead to wherever. I ...

Sweating

... was slightly more genuine that I was expecting. I grew happy sitting on the side of the road drinking chai back to back to back to back glad I wasn't either baking myself on a tin roof, or baking myself over hot asphalt while struggling to peddle a cycle rickshaw. I still had to drink about 8 liters of water a day as the temperatures in Kolkata soared into the 100s. And drinking hot chai only made me sweat more, and by sweating more I ...

... listed on the carriage with our seat number. I got upper berth, which is sought after, and hated it. Will swap next time. After 3 days on the road we arrived in Kolkata and headed for Sudder st the packpacker heartland. We had Breakie where I met a couple of women from Perth right next to me. Im staying at Ashok Guest house.... Bit of a dive but OK. Will update again in a few days. PS I uploaded heaps of pics of Bhutan today in a marathon effort by me.

Calcutta and Gaya

... Kolkata alone. "Pandals" are essentially shrines, and can take any shape or form and are usually made from bamboo and string. Some are simple, and some are huge and vastly intricate. One such pandal was a slightly scaled down versin of Hogwarts School and the hogwarts express, from the HArry Potter novels. The building was immense and inside, as with all other pandals, was a clay idol of the goddess Durga and her four children. At the end of the festival, all of the Durga idols ...
