A freezing cold 4 am start to get to Tiger Hill for sunrise over the Himalyas. We couldn't understand the timing when it took only a half hour to wind up the hairpin bent road, but the timjnv gave us an "inside lounge" view instead of standing outside and jostling for a view. However, inside did not equate with warm. Despite our multiple layers, …
We arrived at the bottom of the Himalayas which meant only one thing….a car journey up the mountain with very few barriers along the edge of the cliff, this didn’t help my nerves!!!
We drove round the hair pin bends up the mountain to Kurseong and stayed the night here before we finished the journey to Darjeeling on …
... my first day, I took a three hour walk down the road into the Indian side, and got suspicious looks from everyone along the way. Again, Neema pointed straight up and said, we're staying at the top of this hill. It was really intense going. Along the way I started to feel really tired and got a pretty intense head ache. The group had split into two (Andrew, Will, Neema and Eric ...Darjeeling, West Bengal, India heatherandrew
... Darjeeling. Even with the seriously scary road conditions, our driver did manage to pass a dozen or so slower cars on the way up Incidentally we are located at around 6500 feet but it seems much higher as the valley floor was right about sea level. When you consider that many of the valleys in the Rockies are at about 5000 feet, the drive up, had we done a similar drive in Colorado, would have taken us to somewhere around 11,000 feet.Darjeeling, West Bengal, India ranette
... on my bunk once I'd put my bag in bed with me too - the small change had dropped out my pocket and gone down the back of the bench to shower everyone else down below. Ooops. So I really didn't want a repeat with the daal. The compartment wasn't separate from the rest of the train. Not a cabin, I guess you only get that in 1st class. Basically the carriage has an aisle running through it, not through the centre but off to the side ...New Jalpaiguri, West Bengal, India izzie
