Historical Traveler Reviews of Decameron San Luis All Inclusive San Andres Island
SICKNESS - FEBRUARY 16-23, 2006
from Val15
We went to the Decameron San Luis the week of February 16th - 23rd. We both became ill the second night and still are experiencing problems. We were not able to enjoy our holiday as we were tied to the washrooms. We soon discovered that we were not alone and that the majority of guests were ill with the same symptoms [cramps, diarrhea and some people throwing up]. The hotel nurse had line-ups each day of guests looking for medication. The Guest Services Manager appeared at our doorstop on the Sunday evening and said that she had heard that we were ill and asked about our symptoms and when this illness started. There were many stories as to the cause of the illness such parasites, bad water from an ice supplied and salmonella. The hotel seemed to be downplaying the widespread of the illness with the majority of guests as was the Nolitour representative. The Manager even suggested to some guests that perhaps people were getting sick as a result of eating off the hotel premises. We did not eat or drink anywhere off premises and still got sick. On departure day at the airport, one of the guests who happened to be a nurse from Canada offered to take any person's name and telephone number as she had had independent testing done in Columbia. She offered to get back to all persons on the list once she received her results back. We received a telephone call on Tuesday, February 28, 2006 that she had tested positive for parasites, namesly giardia. We have since contacted our doctor and have been tested for this parasite and are awaiting the results.
The hotel, while older, appeared very clean. The room we had in the 3000 block was very small with no dresser so we lived out of suitcases for the week which was no big problem.
Being sick the whole vacation ruined our holiday and unfortunately, while we enjoyed the people and the island itself, it ruined any desire to return to San Andres, Columbia.
Old hotel but clean

We were in San Andres San Luis from 16Feb to 23Feb 2006. It is true that 80% of the poeples were sick.
The food was good tasting so were did the illness come from? we were not able to pinpoint it. I was probably the only one that was not sick althoug I experience some belly cramps since I have come back, nothing serious. The hotel is old but very clean.
Overall we got what we paid for. It is just infortunate what happen, I suppose that it can happen to any hotel. The island is great, poeple nice, good shopping ect.

Loved it!

Wow...We where in San Andres , beginning of december and this Island surpassed all of my expectation! There was always a little breeze that kept us cool and i loved it,it's a small island so, from the airport to the hotel was 6-7 minutes or so, in an included taxi! great...once the idea of an hotel builded right along the roadside with the beach by the other side of the street is accepted, a non busy road should i say, the whole rest is well worth your money! Always had something interesting in the daily buffet, the Japanese and the italian were great and we didn't even went to the other restaurant in town that were included!!! No need!! Staff was very cool, rooms are small but very clean, ( take a second floor room so you may have a view on the sea )the locals are very kind especially for a guy that calls himself Banana and will offer you all the possible tours for a great price and will even accompain you there) You will also meet a Rastaman who is named Tino and is German wife Diane(DO NOT PICTURE HIM OR IS FAMILY WITHOUT TALKING TO THEM FIRST ) they sell artcraft and they will offer you a seafood diner at their own house, go for it, been there with a gang, had a great meal, taxi from the hotel to there house, beer, wine everything you want for a cheap price...by the way, all the excursions that Mr Banana will offer you are very affordable ex: taxi ( his own )from the hotel to downtown, boat to Aquario Island, snorkling with lots of fishes ( bring bread from the morning buffet ) boat again from Aquario to Johnny key Island, lunch ( chicken or fish, take the fish) boat again from Johnny key to downtown and taxi from there back to the hotel...Price : 22$ usd...including Mr Banana that will stay with you for the whole day!!! We offered him a drink or something and he refused it saying that , since he was bringing people to the island, he was going to be feeded by the merchant!!!A beer on the Islands? 1$ usd!!! There is a Rasta Bar just across the street from the hotel,( the only bar in sight by the way ) he also sells the beer for a buck!!! to resume i'll say that hotel deserves all of it's stars and more...GO GO GO !!!
Um ah o com on di...allo?!?!?

i just came back from san andres and stayed at the decameron san luis...
well straight up,
the food is bad, the rooms are garbage, the pools are very small and dirty (you cant go skinny dipping at night), there are no phones in the rooms(you have to pay 2 dollars american to make an out going phone call to canada). there is no night life what so ever, it's like everyone on the island leaves.
other than that the day life is amazing there is always something to do. if you decide to go on any tour, go to johnny cay, it is amazing the beach there is paradise. during the day you can go downtown and go shopping, there are so many perfume shops and they are cheap, i got a bottle of jean paul and ferrari for like $50 american. all the clothes are very cheap. i also got a diesel tank top for $15 american. the service at our hotel was very good. th maids were very freindly even thou my friends and i made a mess in the room every night. the bar tenders are funny exspcially when you are drunk. the drinks are so hard there is more alchol then juice in the drinks which makes it very easy to get drunk.
i highly recommend that you do not stay at the decameron san luis but instead stay at the aqarium. the rooms there are soo much nicer and the food and service seems to be alot better.
trust me if u ever do go to san andres stay at the aquarium.
so to make a long story short, there is nothin really to do at night time, the shopping is cheap and the weed is extreamly good
The worst vacation we ever had

Decameron San Luis is poorly mantained, the food is bad, the beach is to small and the guests are too noisy. No phones at the rooms, shortage of running water and noisy air conditioning equipment near the rooms. And the island is very poor and suffers a lack of infrastructure.
Decameron San Luis is not the best place to spend your holidays.
Loved the week at Decameron San Luis
from h_vogl_62
My wife and I just came back from a week at the Decameron San Luis .
The whole complex is safe , terrific colorful , and exeptionally clean !
Friendly and helpful personell . The rooms small , but comfortable , with shower, toilette , sink, fridge , safety-box , even T.V. and as I said before , unbelievably clean ! The three pools and the suroundings are cleaned everyday ! We never even saw a discarded papercup lying around for more than five minutes ! There are people going throughout the day keeping everything clean and tidy ! Personell handling food always wear face-masks and rubber-gloves ! Water , even Ice-cubes come in sealed containers ! Fruits , food , drinks galore ! Great variety and good presentation. We enjoyed everything , eat and drank everything , exept tap-water , and had no ill effects whatsoever !
Friendly people , security personell , cab-drivers ! There is also a enjoyable nightly show , with the guests participation !
We took a tour of the Island with a wonderful friendly cab-driver in a well kept and superclean car ! He showed us anything we wanted to see, explained everything to us und we enjoyed almost five hours with him , for a very modest fee .
Sure , the Island is very poor and when you wander off by yourself , you may see things you do not like . But if you stay at the Hotel you sure can enjoy every day . The beach is just across the rather narrow road and is quite clean ! Early in the morning you may find some garbage , but it is cleaned before the beach-lounges are put out . The ocean ist absolutely beautiful ! The wawes strong and there are some
coral areas , where you have to be careful not to hurt your feet , but after this narrow strip you can snorkel or scuba-dive , or just swim and enjoy the clear asur-blue water !
If you want a six-star Hotel with big rooms and marbel all around and all the convenience money can buy , go somewhere else. If you want relaxation , sun , a beautiful brise , colorful surroundings , friendly people , clean pools , clean air , clean ocean , wonderful beach . . . try San Luis !
We enjoyed it tremensly and sure will be back !
San Luis, great resort, our third time there.

I dont understand why anyone would not like the San Luis ?
My wife and I have been there 2 times , and are going again in feb/05.
The staff is great, food selection was one of the best we've seen at any of the 8 alliclusive trips we've been on. The beach is not the best we've seen, but close to it! The hotel is a little older, but the staff seens to be cleaning 24 hrs a day. One thing I would also like every one to know is,
like everthing in life, you get what you pay for. If you want a $3000.00
a week vacation, in a new resort, then book one there. Dont book a $1200.00 trip and then say the place was not fancy enough for your taste.
Fire Trap
from bill109
All of us got very sick after three days. The rooms are all wooden with no working fire alarms. To get to the beach (where shoes, drug stuff on beach) you have to cross a busy road. Food uneatable, drink`s poor, line up very long.
Stay away.
