Angkor Wat!

Well, we'v been in Cambodia for a couple of days now, crossing the border wasn't too bad as we'd stayed overnight near the border so we could get there before all the buses from Bangkok arrived. Tried to pay the $20 official fee, but the guy behind the counter just closed his windows when anyone except this other local guy who was charging 1000 Baht to get your visa for you (20 pounds rather than $20) So in the end we had to pay more. Met a nice couple crossing the border at the same time as ...

Angkor and Khmer History

Jayavaram VII, spoke of his intentions in erecting temples as being: "full of deep sympathy for the good of the world, so as to bestow on men the ambrosia of remedies to win them immortality. By virtue of these good works would that I might rescue all those who are struggling in the ocean of existence." Day 40. Cockroach Curry 24/05/2008 I left at 6am on a train from Bangkok. As I reached the border I decided to approach some backpackers to see if I could share a tuk-tuk with them. I could no...

Tomb Raider Meets The End of My Temple Tolerance

Because the sole daily flight between Vientiane and Siem Reap was full, I had to fly to Phnom Penh, Cambodia, and take a 6-hour bus to get to Siem Reap, Cambodia, a place that is on the tourism trail solely for the Ankhor Wat temple complex, as featured in Lara Croft and Indiana Jones, and considered by some to be the so-called Eighth Wonder of the World. But with 1000 people a day traipsing through the temples and touching the bas-reliefs, I question whether they will last much longer due to...

Buddhist Monks Get Their Comeupance

Our hotel in Siem Reap is the rather curious Dead Fish Tower. A sign upon entrance warns you to watch your step, watch your head and watch out for the crocodiles. The bar area is split over four levels. It kind of looks like something Buddhist ewoks might build. And yes, there's lots of crocodiles as well as other pools containing large biting fish. Angkor is THE reason for visiting Siem Reap. Our plan was to hire a motorbike and visit by ourselves but we fail to find any for rent. A few peop...

me and a man made wonder of the world

we arrived in siem reap in the evening time fairly tired from a long bus ride with many stops. i did some research in the lonely planet and settled on a guest house called the dead fish guest house.. it was well advertised in the lonely planet; they said they had a great restaurant that was similar to an old rusty boat and that they had a crocodile pit. unfortunately the restaurant was undergoing renovations while we were there so there were no crocs mate, but the guest house was nice, and ve...

Angkor and More

Siem Reap Our day started at 4:00am, to make it in time for our 10:00am flight. Who knows why we got up so early, but we weren't really sure how to get to the airport. Better early than late I guess, I think it was our first flight on time. No problems with the flight, luckily Meg picked up some more pills in Kuala Lumpur to calm her nerves. When we arrived at Siem Reap airport we were surprised to see such a different landscape. There was so much land and from what we could see not really an...

Lots of Wats

Arriving at Siem Reap, we were suppose to receive a lift to our hostel. However no one was there, sop we got swept up by a very keen tuk tuk driver (Mr Gia). HE assured us he had the most luxurious tuk tuk and the only one with a light (which appeared true). Lucky catch because he looked after us and gave cold drinking water. Saw the major temples on the first day. Absoluetly phnomenal, the size and enormity. Decided to get up at leave at 5am to catch sunrise over Angkor Wat along with hundre...

Angkor What?

I made it on the bus to Siem Reap! Total travel time 6 hours on an air conditioned bus that played Mr Bean and Cambodian Karaoke videos the whole way! I had been warned by mates who have visited here that when you get off at the bus station you will be mobed by tuktuk/moto drivers. I found that all a bit overwhelming at the airport in Phnom Penh but this was just insane! There was a guard standing at the exit of the bus basically keeping these guys from getting on the bus to self pick their c...

The Jungle Entry and a little about Angkor Wat

Oh dear. Our trip is happening too fast for us to document. Today my feet are filthy, my legs are like jelly, and my head is sluggish. But its to be expected after a 12 hour stint at Angkor Wat and surrounding areas. I want to write some highlights from the past few days, and I really hope I don't forget all of the amazing things we have experienced. We left Singapore a week ago. We arrived at the train station at 5 am to find out that the train was sold out, and they had standing only ticket...

Malgrat la febrada i els problemes intestinals que se'n deriven al cap d'unes hores, no em tiro enrere. He decidit passar tres dies visitant temples, i aixi sera. I sobrevisc. Sobrevisc a la febrada i a les fiblades intestinals (encara que les carreres a la recerca d'un dels ...
