An early morning and 8 hours in a train got me to Amsterdam at 3pm. So I had one evening to enjoy the city, and while one can't see much in about 9 hours, I feel satisfied. From the persistent smell of marihuana, to the historic old buildings, to the red light district's women advertising themselves in window displays, to the endless canals, parks, and plazas, I saw a lot. It was a very long, quiet day on the bus. We had a short stopover in Heidleburg, where we just wandered around for an hour, then most of us slept the rest of the way into St Goar. As outsiders we have romantic notions about Amsterdam's bikes, but in reality it's just a really practical way of getting around the maze of narrow streets.
