... a spanner tightening up some very big bolts which he dropped into the water! If we had been underneath it would probably have hit us. Then he started grinding with a shower of sparks and dust coming down, and then he did some arc welding. We had to wait until the job was complete and must have been almost an hour in total as it was 11.30 by the time we got out of the 12.5 metre rise lock.

It was pouring when I arrived in Wervik and I enjoyed the quiet time standing with all the bicycles, being sheltered from the rain, and soaking in the European scene - glistening wet cobbled streets, the small cars, the brick architecture.

... in Brugge. We met a family from North Carolina who were travelling, but I'm not sure where to. I must admit one of the most humorous moments on this trip was when the young boy in the family asked his father if fruit *****. Priceless. After the canal tour we headed to CorrJan, a small supermarket. We bought green apples, a bag of pickle flavored potato chips and two liters of Coca Cola. Sure to be a wonderful snack for the evening.
