... 20 year olds hanging out in what I would call gothic attire. As I was doing laundry they would in turn just scream - not in pain or for help, just like releasing frustration at the world. My thought is maybe they are just trying to scare the tourists - it was beginning to work on me. I finished and ensured I was on the other side of the street with other tourists when I passed this crew. Made it to the hotel, and had a nice club sandwich and beer at the Dominican Hotel. Great night ...

... mobile from Qatar worked and Aunty Josette said she would soon be on her way. It was pouring when I arrived in Wervik and I enjoyed the quiet time standing with all the bicycles, being sheltered from the rain, and soaking in the European scene - glistening wet cobbled streets, the small cars, the brick architecture.

... Antwerp's lovely multi-storey train station. Piek led us on a great Rotterdam city walk past the marina, old steam sailing ships and the famous cube apartments. These were built 30 years ago and are quite illusionary! Take a peek at the website. It was great to visit them in their apartment by the canal, and we hope we see Piek in NZ again before too ...

... I visited, in 1969. I still remember eating big cones of tasty fries for 11 francs (33 cents), mayonnaise thrown in of course. Now a smaller cone of tasteless chips (I won't even call them frites) is 3.50 euros, nearly $5. You are waiting for the insult, of course you are, you cannot avoid it: the mayonnaise was half a euro extra.

... and got a local train to Brugge, where at our B&B we were welcomed with a nice Belgium tradition of a free cold beer. Got a feeling we're going to like this place!

Mind you, we're going to need something to take the edge off, as carrying this 70 litre rucksack is going to take some getting used ...
