Historical Traveler Reviews of De La Bere Hotel Cheltenham

Terrible

from RachelCook
My husband booked for us to stay at the Hotel De La Bere for my birthday in January and it was quite honestly the worst hotel I have ever stepped inside. It was dirty, run down and generally awful and this was just the reception area.

The bedroom was so grubby, with dead insects on the window sill, mould in the bathroom and was just old and tatty. There was no way that I was sleeping in that room it was such as disappointment. It was so bad that we drove to Bourton On the Water and stayed at a lovely hotel there instead!!!! We accepted that we had lost our money on the De La Bere and opted for a far nicer cleaner hotel elsewhere!!

I often read the reviews on here and think that people are just being picky but after this experience I will definately look at the reviews on here before booking again.

DO NOT STAY AT THIS HOTEL!

Stayed here for the New Year Package 2006

from A TripAdvisor Member
We have just returned from the "New Year Package" (2nights) and had a fab time.

The hotel is absolutely beautiful and has bags of character.

The staff are excellent-very attentive.

The general manager Ian was a lovely gentleman and spoke at length with us and was genuinely interested in our feedback regarding the hotel.

The food was fantastic!! truly 5 star we could not fault it in any way.

The only down side was that we stayed in a room directly above the bar and the noise carried a lot, had we been staying longer than two nights we would have asked to be moved, but we knew they were fully booked so we made do.

Our friends had a courtyard room and were pleasantly surprised considering the previous reviews.

Overall it was a magical start to 2006 and we will definitely stay again!

De La Bere - lovely hotel

from A TripAdvisor Member
We were guests at a wedding at the De La Bere in June last year and in general the hotel was really lovely, the hotel manager and his staff made my nephews wedding day really special and the food was excellent. The rooms were well appointed and clean and they also do some great murder mystery evenings which we have booked up for at the end of this month! We are looking forward to going back to the De La Bere and would recommend it to anyone.

Great Food - Unpleasant Courtyard Room

from KentWoman
We stayed at this hotel during August. It was our second trip to De La Bere. We had stayed in the main building before and our room was beautiful. This time were were put in one of the courtyard rooms and it was awful. I have NEVER seen such a filthy bathroom - we didn't want to use it. We complained at the time and wrote down our views on a form that was supplied in the room. I was very impressed with the prompt reply we received from the manager who sent a letter a few days after we arrived home. He admitted that the rooms needed refurbishing and that they were not up to standard. Then why use them? I do hope they have been upgraded by now. Only then would I consider returning.

On the plus side, we thought the food was great!

They have a wonderful opportunity here - I do hope that they don't waste it.

Beautiful Grounds,dissapointing rooms

from shoegal1
I stayed at the Hotel De la Bere in August 2005 and my partner and I were unimpressed. The main building itself is beautiful and old, but the accomodation was shabby and unclean. The room itself was in the out buildings and it had the potential to be a lovely room, but we had dirty towels, filthy walls and the inside bed spread was covered in blood. We complained to the mager who told us we could not move rooms as the hotel was full with a wedding party, but he did have the room cleaned again for us. We asked about he facilities, but they were poor. There is an outdoor pool, but that was not opern despite the fact it was mid August!

The hotel is currently being sold from the Corus Group, so I suggest you leave it for a few months until visiting this hotel, maybe then the standard to accomodation will have improved.

Fab buiding that needs some TLC!

from g111
A stunning building dating from 1400. The grounds are well kept and impressive. We stayed in courtyard rooms that were very disappointing - tired and, I'm sorry to say, not particularly clean. The public areas are also in need of some investment. The staff were lovely - particularly with the children - and we were impressed with the food and the service in the restaurant. Outside there is an unused pool that if refurbished would make a great addition to the hotel. In terms of value for money, it's ok, and I got the impression that the rooms in the main building were probably of a better standard. I really hope they make some investement and bring the interior up to the same standard as the exterior.

Brilliant break

from A TripAdvisor Member
The perfect place for a weekend break. The staff were very friendly and accommodating - especially in the restaurant. Made to feel as if our visit was appreciated. The decor i.e. carpets were in need of an overhaul, but this didn't detract from the atmosphere. Unfortunately the pool was not in use, which was a shame as it was a very hot weekend.

Would have been nice to see more overseas tourists - where are all the Americans?

Lovely romantic hotel

from A TripAdvisor Member
The exterior of the hotel is stunning - although the interior and rooms are in need of refurbishment the dining room is a wonderful setting which is matched by the quality of the food and the service. I would definitely stay again - good value for money at £109 DBB for 2 people in double room.

Beautiful building, interior a little worn around the edges

from A TripAdvisor Member
I have stayed here a couple of times. The facade of the building is absolutely beautiful. Don't expect the rooms to live up to the promise of the exterior. The rooms are clean and functional and are OK just don't expect the height of luxury. Staff are very helpful and polite.

Would still recommend the hotel and will stay again.

Top wedding venue

I got married at the Hotel De la Bere in January of this year - it is a fantastic place, the rooms, the food, the service and staff are excellent. The hotel has bags of atmosphere and is in a gorgeous setting - this place cannot be faulted in any way!
