Our last town to visit was Marken. We travelled there by boat from Volendam, which was somewhat enjoyable though the day was quite miserable. Marken used to be an island in the Zuiderzee, but now was connected to the mainland by a causeway. ... money each year to keep it dry. Most of the windmills fell into disrepair , a few of them have been restored to its original state.They are fantastic to walk in. Everything is so big and looks very strong.
Next stop Volendam, nothing special to do there except have a glass of wine and enjoy the scenery
Home again late afternoon, just in time for Wim to cook us another gormet dinner, which we enjoyed sitting by the open fire.
What a nice day we had.

... Turn a corner, there are the dodgems! Cheese market square was full of fairground rides with hardly any cheese in sight! Damn those guidebooks!


Still Edam was very pleasant to wander round and we did go into a few cheese shops and admire the cheese. What more can I say? It's cheese !

A decision to stay

... we were looking at yesterday were a Friesland breed and very valuable, we were assured that the farmer would have expended every effort to rescue his horse! Later in the afternoon, I walked over to check on them and all were present and correct, some eating and some going in for the mutual grooming that horses do.

No book was delivered today, so the decision to stay was the right one. In terms of the fridge, it only used 7 amps overnight ...

... to a coffee and water (€7, so again not cheap). It’s a cracking little town, very photogenic and judging by the yachts in the marina, our decision to opt for Stavoren was a wise one.

On the way back, we passed something redolent of Milton Keynes, only more colourful (see cows!).
