We followed the group as far as the Grand Place before running away to avoid the group photo. As we were walking one of the organisers described it as the international sorting system – the English at the front ...

... room (salon? parlor? drawing room?) where we partook of strong coffee and homemade cookies. I spoke to several of the other interns, one of whom had lived in India and learned Hindi, and another who had - if you can believe this - seen me on a train from Bruges to Brussels in the early autumn and remembered me.
