Time to move on

... I must have. As you can see from the pictures, it really was just about the parties.

On the last couple of days, I could have got out of bed to do something with my day but decided I´d seen enough and that staying in bed was the best idea. When this happened I knew it was time to move on!

It turned out to be the last weekend for several others too... Alex, Sven, Jeremy and I were all leaving and Dan wouldn´t be far behind. So we ...

Livin la vida loca in Buenos Aires, and loving it!

... this trip. Don´t really want to relive it so that´s all the info but to sum up, it sucks but we are fine, still a little jumpy at times but getting over it. From that bad experience we met some really nice Chileans who helped us file a report and then showed us a slice of the Chilean lifestyle with a night out, a tour of the city, and then a home-cooked family meal... yummy! One bad experience led to something good but ...

My longstay in Buenos Aires

... I had to stop myself laughing at times. Then we went to Palermo for drinks and had trouble parking. Again. We came across a guy on every street waving a piece of white cloth. I asked Fran who they were and he explained these guys randomly and corruptly took ownership of a street (all across Buenos Aires, particularly in the wealthy areas) and wave people to parking spaces on the public road but at a price, and you’d be lucky if they didn’t nick your car stereo ...

Sitting down to write.

... for breakfast--mostly just two medialunas and coffee or mate (an herbal drink similar to tea). Lunch is a pretty good sized meal, but dinner seems to be where it's at. And often Parrilla. And/or pasta. Lots of italian immigrants here, and so the food has a huge italian influence. And often dinner starts at 9:30 or 10:00. Yes, at night. Small children are out and about on the street until 10:00, and no one looks askance. I am not on this schedule ...

Return to Buenos Aires

... sun which set the scene for the next few days. Our other nights out included clubbing at the ridiculously overpriced Crobar, dancing to Reggaeton at a downtown club in Palermo, a trip to the Irish pub to meet a Peruvian friend I made in Santiago, Chile. Although it could be said that we put more effort into reaping the rewards of the Buenos Aires night life, we did do a lot of day activities which included a tour to the La Boca neighbourhood to watch tango, a visit to ...

Buenos Aires, the final frontier

... as the most dodgy part of town. There are quite a few homeless in the streets around this area and at night San Telmo is, apparently, not the place to be. For the remainder of my stay I moved to Recoleta which is a far more salubrious area on the east side of the city. Recoleta is fringed by Palermo (super expensive, bit Notting Hill like) and Centro (explains itself I think) and is a bit boho but not quite so edgy as San Telmo. It's home to another ...

Part 1: First Impressions of South America

... social life. The orginal plan was to spend 3-4 weeks in BsAs doing intensive lessons, getting together all my kit and a little sight seeing. It actually happened like this: Week 1- Needed to wait till week 2 to start lessons, so spent my time sight seeing and looking for bike & camping shops. The city was becoming more quiet during my stay as this is summer time and ...

Darcie hits the jackpot!

... foreigners - that there was a maximum withdrawal of 300 pesos per transaction, but that it was possible to do three withdrawals per day. I think both Darcie and I were skeptical of this, me especially, because I had withdrawn 600 pesos at once, numerous times before. And Darcie had troubles previously trying to take out even 200 pesos. But lo and behold - 300 pesos came out of the machine! The look on Darcie's face was priceless ...

Argentina: Buenos Aires (Part 3)

... the courage to speak to, don't understand what you are saying as your pronouniciation is off. Our teacher Gabriela is great she took us on a bus and got us to ask the driver if this was the bus to Modern Art Museum and if he could tell us where to get off. The problem is that if they don't give you the answer you are expecting (e.g. Si) it is quite difficult! We asked for the museum which the bus stops right outside, but the driver ...

Guess what happened to me.

... Actually, it's kind of a fun atmosphere. But then, enter the 3 blonde American students. There was a guy, about my age, well dressed and relatively harmless looking, sitting on a box about a block ahead and across the street. As soon as he stood up, I knew I was screwed. When we got within about 1/3 of a block, he just started sprinting at us. He just cornered me and let the girls go (chivalrous!) and said, in very good ...
