... puttered along at 20MPH out a-way-a-ways (that's the technical term) until I could no longer see the entrance. That was far enough. It would be very easy to get disoriented on the flats. Now that I think about it, I wonder what it would be like to camp there overnight. Hmmmmm.
Nobody was racing or attempting any speed records, but it was still worth getting there.
West Wendover is in Nevada.
Wendover is in Utah.
Really now, are there two states that could be more different? And they are neighbors?
What are the odds? Oh, to figure that you'd better make sure you're on the Nevada side of the border. :-)
It was a 7 and a half hour day of pedeling with some serious climbing. We ended the day with a spectacular view of the Salt Flats. After 107 miles I am going to eat and then get some rest for tomorrow we will go accross the flats. I don't think that the pictures will be much of a difference.
Wendover, Utah, United States bot989... are anywhere for that matter hardly pay much attention to it. The one harbor I know of has only a few sailboats. One of my goals before I move away is to swim in the Great Salt Lake (I heard you float well because of all the salt!) The question is where? It's very flat and shallow for a long, long ways out.
This lake is so unique in the world. It's real shallow most places and no ...
... we were there we witnessed the beginnings of a passing thunderstorm. Dark skies, strong winds, lightning and thunder were very easy to see on this open landscape. The smell of rain filled the air. Sure enough, it began to pelt our car as soon as we re-entered the highway. We passed Salt Lake City and the Great Salt Lake and retired tonight in Wendover, a small town at the border of Utah and Nevada.
Wendover, Utah, United States saraishness... Flats at sunset; very earie. A lone road splitting the white, sparkling salted flats. The setting sun's glare made seeing the road in front of you almost impossible. Right on the state and timezone border, Wendover is an I-Drive, shout-it-out style casino town on the west/Nevada side. The east/Utah side is just kinda worn and run down feeling; a poor hanger-on to its wealthier cousin.
Wendover, Utah, United States chere... 55 square miles of sand with dunes 750 feet high created by the force of the wind pummeling rocks against the base of the Sangre de Christo mountains (named "Blood of Christ" because a Spanish priest in the 1500s saw a blood-red sunset as he was dying.) The next day we did a bike ride across the Colorado Plateau, which is as flat as the Eastern Shore near Chesapeake Bay. For a few days we thought we had a mild bug, as we had no energy, had headaches, and were short of ...
Durango, Colorado, United States marshallandthom... organic grocery store, Wild Oats Market). We ate in San Francisco, at a place called Pier 49 Pizza. We three took all the vegetarian and cheese pizzas and made the two Indians from the sleep medicine conference behind us sad. They had to wait. Suckers.... Next up was World Cup! That bruising game with Italy that I am sure all of you guys saw. After the draw match we went into the LDS Temple. Actually the Mormon Church does not allow non-Mormons into their temple ...
Salt Lake City, Utah, United States thebhatIf you want proof that domestic air travel has degenerated to buses with wings, I think we can start with the actual buses that took us from the B terminal of IAH to a Continental Embraer plane. In the his plane, the first shall be last and the last shall be first because we are in one class-less commuter jet. Too bad the commute is not to Dallas or some ...
Salt Lake City, Utah, United States thebhat... t fit in too well with the big guys in cowboy hats, who all knew how to line-dance and two-step. It was an interesting scene, and all ages came together. I danced with Melanie's short, amply-proportioned roommate, Sonia, which was like dancing with two boobs. During the daytime, Melanie worked as public transit coordinator for Provo, Utah. I stayed at home with Melanie's playful black lab adolescent, Pako. Pako's two favorite household activities were: 1. Chasing me ...
