      ... many cheese operations, and it seemed that most farms were organized and prosperous. We killed ourselves laughing when we tried to order our coffees at Tim Hortons in French. We wish our Language skills were better, but we will keep trying and everyone seems to patient with our efforts. Our first sight of the St Lawrence Seaway was in an area that had delta-like tributaries or little islands everywhere. Docks lined the shore and there were lots of gorgeous boats ...

      Sept 14th

      We decided to add a stop today and it was a short drive from Montreal to Trois-Riviers. It is the second oldest city in Quebec but it is not very large. The drive was picturesque, as usual, but we are now starting to see a hint of fall color in the leaves. We again noticed cathedrals everywhere.       ... disastrous results. Our water policies in the west are only now starting to catch up with reality. Hopefully every aquifer in the west will not be drained before we figure out how to live in a way that is consistent with the nature of our environment.

      ... a lot of construction. After we got through that, we encountered a very busy farmer's market and some other festival. We decided it best to head for the exit and Highway 401. As we approached the 401 . . . the Est (east) entrance was closed--CONSTRUCTION! . . . and no info on a detour. But, eventually we figured it out!

      Carol didn't think much of my flirtation with history!! That lost us about 45 minutes ...
