Left early at 7 am, and went to Foo Lum Restaurant for dimsum breakfast. Hmm, I must say Hongkong dimsum is overrated, or was it just the restaurant's offerings? First item was century egg porridge and yau char kwai. Skipped the porridge, and took the yau char kwai only. Then came a giant bamboo steamer with (supposedly) 12 portions of har gau, siu mai, sui ching gau and char siew pau. These - hmm, just so so. The siu mai's texture was too soft, while the pau had very little filling. The next...
Shenzhen, China jayellWe got up and caught two taxis to the train station - one taxi could not fit 4 people and the luggage for 4 people so Mel and Nana went together and a few minutes later, Pa and I went. The taxi had been driving for at least 5 minutes when I noticed a sign similar to the one that I could see from our hotel room. I look out the other side of the taxi and what do I see but our hotel. Because of the road system and one-way streets, it took us ages to just cross the road!!!! We arrived at the stat...

After one of the most hair-raising rides in my life, changing my underwear 3 times, and being passed from one cab driver to another on the side of the highway, I finally arrived in Shekou. My hotel was in an area known as Marina Square (also known as Sea World square but minus Shamu). The ...
After 4 hours of delays at O'Hare and several beers later, I made it onto the flight to Hong Kong. There were luckily enough people on my flight also going to Vietnam that they held the connecting flight for us. So, I am now eating a Dragon Fruit, a spiky, purple and green fruit while waiting for my connection to Saigon. Only 4 more hours on a plane!!! Yay!
Hong Kong, China meclayt... workout gym, and social area for the complex because it is so big. Katy and Matt live with one of Matt's friends from home, Garrett, who also teaches English. Katy said it's been an adjustment living with two boys and just being in a foreign country where Chinese is written and used everywhere but overall she has grown to love her time in Hong Kong. They let me use the internet while we watched the final for the rugby sevens tournament in Hong Kong ...

Hong Kong, China shandy86... familiarity. Hong Kong, like London is a very international city, and there are a surprising amount of Indians, Africans, and of course whiteys. Definitely more than Beijing, Hong Kong felt like a city where I could really plant my ex-pat roots and stay for a while. Also, even though we were slightly worried about losing Adam's translating skills as Hong Kongers speaks Cantonese--not Mandarin--we realized quickly that everyone speaks English. In fact, it was rather humbling to realize ...
Shenzhen, China rachaelb... a lot in these places. It is only in olde Englishe tales such as The Wind of the Willows or American road movies that I've seen Petrol Pump attendants. Drive onto a garage forecourt in China and you will see people bedecked in colourful uniforms lined up to do the onerous task of putting petrol into a car. Usually there is more than one person per pump. Why? A good question. There is undoubtedly something in the argument that wealthy car owners enjoy having their ...
