... the 1850's and has a lot of historical stuff based on the early gold mining that took place in the area. Road to Barstow passes through the Mojave Desert so it's a pretty barren place. Traffic was pretty bad everyone heading home from Vegas perhaps and Californians are **** drivers. ... exited when we realised that we already had the information we needed. On the way in, we’d had to buy a car pass of $30 – that was the only charge to enter – and been given a handy map and set of information. We walked up to our first viewpoint, called Mather Point, which was just by the visitor’s centre. The view was breathtaking. The canyon is massive!

... no signs of tall trees. In fact, we were alternating between shrubs and normal pine trees. Once we were near the top of these mountains, we were suddenly in the middle of a forest of giant trees!! The trees were so tall that you have to strain your neck to see their top.
