... days weren't the most eventful, but I did have my first rattle snake encounter. I was walking along a dam made lake just after climbing a mountain, starting to feel really tired as I neared my planned resting point. Out of nowhere there was a fast loud rattle that didn't stop. I must of been pretty quiet because when the snake started to rattle I was just over 2 feet away from it. It was sitting there, just off to the side of the trail. ... is the first place I've seen gas at over $5 a gallon. I crossed over the interstate and embarked on the 70 mile stretch through the heart of the Mojave Desert where the towns of Essex, Danby, Chambless, Amboy and Bagdad have either disappeared or almost disappeared. The road rises constantly to Cadiz Summit which has also lost its cafe and gift shop and the remaining buildings are covered in graffiti. All along the side of the road people have arranged stones ...

... small gallery with a nice lady inside with whom we spoke. She had watercolor paintings and photographs that she had produced, hanging on the walls. Also she had in there a small dog, a chihuahua that was running around, as well as another lady who apparently was there to take a class in drawing by gallery holder. As we continued our trip we soon arrived in Barstow where we found and checked in at a Best western plus motel. It was actually not more expensive on some of ...
