What is great about backpacking with no fixed agenda or itinerary, is that you can make changes to your plans at any time, based on how you feel or based on things you read & hear. That was the case with our visit to Vienna & Kitzbuhel. We had not planned to visit Austria, but since we were so close to Vienna we decided to go there & since we were in Austria, ...

This little town is very pretty indeed – high, snowy mountains and a great big lake. Plenty of pretty little houses also. We had a good walk around – took plenty of photos including a funny one of Craig wearing an interesting hat – he looks so much like Poppa in that photo. Only bad thing was that ...

(The High Alpine Road with Mountains and Glaciers)

Today we drove the Grossglockner high alpine road, which goes through the Hohe Tauern national park. The road is named for the Grossglockner mountain, the highest in Austria at 3798 meters. The road is 48 km long with 36 hairpin turns, and ascends up and over a pass in the Alps called the Hochtor (high gate) at 2504 km. The Hochtor is also the border between the Austrian states of Salzburg and Carinthia.

      ... a basketball player!

Gerrit and Aniko were the best hosts anyone could have asked for—their deep understanding of the town’s history and art history complimented each other so perfectly, it was like we had a paid, guided tour all over town!
