... best way to see Bromo is at sunrise: we arose at 3am despite not getting to our hotel until after midnight. There are two options for sunrise: you can see it from the base of the main cone, or from Penanjakan viewpoint, which allows you to actually see the cone as the sunrises. ... right next to mount Bromo, a volcano. After lunch and a nap we walked by ourselves to the volcano. It took just under an hour including walking over the ash mounds and then up the 241 steps at the side. We thought it probably would be a let down, buttt... It was amazing!!! And because we didn't do it as a tour there was nobody around!!! We were so pleased with ourselves :-D as we came back down a guy was selling water ...
