ARRIVING IN ZINTAN IN MID MAY,THE FOLLOWING ACCOUNT OF REBEL ACTION WAS RELATED TO ME BY A LOCAL CIVILIAN:

ON THE MORNING OF 7/5/11,GADDAFI'S FORCES ATTACKED ZINTAN FROM THE EAST IN SOME NUMBERS.
SO,USING WEAPONS THAT THEY HAD OBTAINED FROM GADDAFI BEFORE THE WAR,OR TAKEN BY FORCE FROM HIS MILITIA SINCE,THE REBELS FOUGHT BACK,WITH THE BATTLE CONTINUING FROM 9 AM TO 7-15 PM.
AT THIS TIME THE GADDAFI MILITIAS RAN AWAY,AND THE REBELS ENTERED THE VILLAGE ...

... now Libya that was making the headlines. The uprising had already started while I was in the airport and my flight back to London had been amongst the very last to leave. Only a few hours later and I'd have been in Libya for rather longer than a short break.
