Tripoli, Libya

... all of the ancient sites is that there are hadly any tourists here. Libya is unspoiled and the spring time is such a nice time to visit because all of the flowers are out and it is very pretty watching the colourful hills roll by. I am in Tripoli now, the capital of Libya. Here for a couple of days and then heading to Tunisia. Having a fabulous time and sad to be leaving such a wonderful country.

Being a Libyan bride

... a red and gold colour theme, all the women were totally dressed up, think Oscars dresses but add a heap more sequence, glitter, lace and matching heavy makeup, they looked beautiful. The first part of the night was lots of singing and dancing to very loud Libyan music, the dancing being incredible hip shaking a bit like belly dancing but different. Late in the evening the Bride arrived ...

New Dog and House Tripoli

So here are some pics of our new house and new dog!! Sorry Meg for this taking me so long to upload. New house was due to a giant mosque which now overshadows our old one and the new dog is because the poor thing was dumped on the farm. Mohammed found him and brought him to us covered in tics and fleas and starving. He said we should keep him as having a dog will keep away the rats and mice - (much to Mohammed's disgust he only ...

Mum and Dads Tripoli visit

Mum and Dad came to visit in November last year for 2 weeks. We kept them busy with trips to Leptus Magna, Sabratha, markets and our kind Libyan friend organised a 2 day tour of the medina! We also had an unfortunate incident with the police, they thought dad was taking pictures of ...

Day 85 - Tripoli of a Lifetime

... made out to be. There's the pretty palm lined boulevards, the seafront promenade, the little cafe-filled squares, the patisseries etc. but it's not quite there. Don't get me wrong, it's a nice city but it ain't the uber-chic place that the guide books tout it as. It's like a 12 year old girl who is going out on her first date and is getting all tarted up. From a distance she look all grown up by up close you can see that the ...

Tripoli. Libya

... grand buildings of monumental stature, indulgent bath complexes and forums for entertainment'. And they are right - a huge site, a lot of the detail still present - large golden sandstone blocks, columns in red, green, white and grey marbles, detailed carvings and all set on the edge of the ocean which was, incidentally, running a very decent surf not often seen in these parts. The sky brooding steely grey and occasionally the sun broke through causing the sandstone ...

Libyan wedding party

... they laughed at us, tried to show us and meanwhile the singer was shouting AUSTRALIA!!! AUSTRALIA!!! AUSTRALIA!!! we felt like the novelty entertainment for the night. The beautiful bride looked like a perfect disney style snow white with heavy makeup, fake eyelashes and full white gown. She sat the whole evening on the chair (in the picture) having her photo taken by the professional photographer and guests lined up to congratulate her. Unfortunatly noone else was allowed to take ...

Prawn Jokes

... and giggling at it like a little school girl. So in honour of B (B, pass me the ball) I have included two very ordinary prawn jokes for your comedic pleasure: The first is just one that I found and think is quite possibly the funniest joke in the world (well, nearly as funny as 'What's the difference between a truckload of bowling balls and a truck load of dead babies? You can't unload the truckload of bowling balls with a pitchfork!). The second ...

Mdina historic tour Tripoli

... involved in the preservation of historical sights in the Mdina and written a book on it's history. The best part of the tour was looking inside the Mosques, each quite different in design and history, the main thing that struck me about the mosques were that they were all very colourful.

Ruins and Caves

And then we were off. Our Labyan driver, Whalid stated that there were no speed limits in Labya. I was a little concerned when there were only two lanes, but the Labs make it into three. If you are overtaking, you sit in the middle of the road. Yes, I have seen some hairy driving in India, Pakistan, Bangladesh and even the M25 in the UK but we were doing 140-160 Klm's !!! **** me, only a month ago, I was doing that speed on an autobahn. At least they have nice ...
