Rice or Noodles?

... with a propane tank and a wok will probably make you some very nice fried rice (chau fan), fried noodles (usually chau mian, but there are several different noodle types) or some fried dumplings. Beyond that, noodle shops and stands are everywhere, making scads of different noodle dishes, all of which are tasty and served in a paper bowl. I could eat this stuff every day. And there are weeks when I probably do. Aside from the fact that these meals ...

... entries. I think that I haven't really said enough about what I do like about China. I call this the yin entry. Yin Good things, and what I like about China Today and yesterday, on my way to and from Huangshan, I saw the China that I imagined before I left the U.S. Rice paddies, rivers, green splindly tree-covered mountains, friendly people (well, away from the mountain that is), oxen swimming in the river, small ...

A Pair of Roosters

Since the boat had been docked all night I had a colder than usual shower before getting the first bus to Wuhan. I actually felt pretty ****** this morning for the first time since starting traveling so I armed myself with some immodium just in case, sod's law would no doubt dictate that an attack of deli belly would wait for a prime moment to hit such as on a long bus journey with the medical kit sealed in the luggage hold. Sleeping most of the way on ...

Trip through the Countryside

Today was probably the highlight of the tour for I ventured through very traditional villages and beautiful countryside. We had an opportunity to meet the traditional people, and this is a really great strength of Intrepid tours. I absolutely loved visiting these villages. We hade an opportunity to visit some of the houses, which are probably reminiscent of houses in Australia back in the early ...

Exploring the Yellow Mountain

... before moving on to their next destination. Given that this is one of my favourite TV shows, I was most impressed when we stumbled across the keys they had to open to move on. On our descent back to the hotel, we passed through the most amazing gardens and scenery I've seen in China - Lonely Planet got it right! It truly is amazing and has made my travels here so worth it. I was relieved to have made it back to the hotel where I relaxed, had dinner and slept ever so well.

... having a few difficult days/interactions with him. We are getting on very well now, and having my own space is really helping me deal with things a lot easier here. The hotel we are staying at is sensational, situated in a most amazing scenic part of Yellow Mountain. Pity about the weather though... very misty and wet. It was relaxing sitting in the hotel's lobby on comfortable sofas drinking the night away with my favourite people on this tour... Rachel, Judy and Ari.

You're gorge-ous

... a 5-storey vessel, carrying several hundred Chinese tourists and about 20 foreigners. We found our comfortable cabin and sat there watching the neon lights of the city light up, just before we set sail. The cruise was for 2 days and 3 nights. Its main selling point is the chance to see the famous Three Gorges carved out by the Yangzi River (the third longest river in the world). The trip arrived at the gorges on the second day. Early on we passed ...

Tunxi/Huangshan - I Was Only, 24 Hours in Tunxi...

... left 4km from the peak to our previously booked hotel. The scenery at the top was somewhat pleasant, but not as inspiring as the Taoists has indicated via the use of the word "holy". I'm not sure if they can re-assess after such a labelling, but perhaps they should. China continues to be logic defying. Locals are employed to carry supplies up and down the mountain in bags slung on bamboo, carried across their shoulders. The locals tramp up the mountain in their mini-skirts and heels or ...

Sea of Clouds

... we waited 2 hours for the 1:30 a.m. train to arrive. We were surprised to see that a drunk guy who sat in front of us tossed his cookies on the floor between his legs, while his friend rubbed his back. We thought it would have been nicer for his friend to take him out of the building! What was even more surprising was that no one, including station staff, cleaned up the mess. After a 17 hour train ride, we arrived in Guangzhou. Not the most ...
