ARRIVAL IN QUITO

We arrived in Quito around 9 pm local (central) time. We had a tour operator meet us at the airport and take us to the Dann Carlton Hotel, about 10 minutes or so from the airport. I'll never forget the 'Wow, I'm in Ecuador' feeling I had as we stood outside waiting for the tour van to come around - it just seemed rather surreal and overwhelming to actually be there. A couple of interesting facts: Quito is the capital city of Ecuador and is situated in a mountain valley at 2850 metres (over 90...

EXPLORING THE OLD TOWN DISTRICT

We had one full day in Quito before heading to the Galapagos. Late in the morning, Laura and I got a taxi to the Old Town district of the city - home to many old churches and other buildings. The taxi driver was friendly and was eager to point out things of interest during the drive there. I, unfortunately, do not know how to speak any Spanish (though I did learn some words and common expressions by the end of the trip). I found the language barrier very frustrating and isolating. Laura, howe...

BACK IN QUITO FOR THE NIGHT

We arrived in Quito around 5pm and got a cab to the hotel. I was feeling very tired and suffered a bit from altitude sickness. I stayed in - ordered room service for dinner and went to bed.

Day 2: June 21, 2007 Atlanta to Quito, Ecuador

Day 2: June 21, 2007 Atlanta to Quito, Ecuador Barbara and I met for breakfast and decided to take the 11:00 shuttle to the airport. There were no lines so we checked in and then walked the 5,000¡ä from the main terminal to the E-Concourse, taking our time to admire the mega-sculptures from Zimbabwe between the T- and A-Concourses. We switched duties watching bags and eating lunch. I read TIME Magazine cover to cover. Our departure was delayed for an hour (Why didn¡¯t that happen yesterday!?!...

Day 12: July 1, 2007 Cotopaxi to Quito

Day 12: July 1, 2007 Cotopaxi to Quito This day was actually a back-up plan. We had originally intended to spend the previous night in Baños but lahars from Tungurahua volcano had blocked the roads making access impossible. Todd and I were in the dining room for a good breakfast by 7:30. We ate and were underway by 8:15. We drove south on the highway to the Pujili where we went to the native market. It was a typical market offering everything imaginable for sale-except things tourists would w...

Day 14: July 3, 2007 Quito to Guayaquil

Day 14: July 3, 2007 Quito to Guayaquil I awoke at 7:30 and took a shower before going down to another great breakfast at 8:15. Everyone interested in exploring Quito congregated in the lobby at 9:30. We split into two groups. The larger group went directly to the old town. Russ, Lynne, Greg, Barbara, and I took two cabs to the Telesférico and rode the tram up to 4100 m on Volcán Guagua Pichincha on the edge of the city. The ride on the tram was breathtaking as we sailed over the steep mounta...

Going into the jungle

We are off to the jungle 0 a flight into Coca then motorised canoe !!!! to La Selva Lodge who proudly proclaim they have`hot water´`. Very excited. On flight out of Santiago we briefly saw Aconcagua = almost twice the height of Mt Cook = changed planes at Lima (hot, dry and dusty) then to Quito. Miles more appealing city than we imagined = amazing architecture and history and Odette (our guide) was really great value. Public building and statues just wonderful = we saw them just on dusk so ev...

Out of the Jungle

Well we are out of the jungle with all limbs still intact. In fact didn´t see any big animals = heaps of monkeys (3 varieties), 100´S of birds, toads, frogs, a racoon, a boa constrictor (at La Selva Lodge curled up in a box of unused glasses = had been there for several months we were told = not as many brilliant vivid flowers as >I expected = but just so amazing to be there in the middle of real jungle = not very far from the Colombian border. Accommodation was wonderful considering where...

First day of trip: Quito, Ecuador

Saturday 21st and Sunday 22nd June We arrived into Quito late in the evening on Saturday 21st after a trip that lasted over 26hours. Each of us had our own issue to contemplate during the long journey. For Tom, that there were only shared video screens on all of the planes we caught and that he forgot his game boy re-charger. For Mark, that he was now in economy after decades in Business or 1st. And for myself, that I was completely lost after the 'Buenos dias Senor y Senora' in the bilingual...

More of Quito

Monday 23rd June Just a short entry for today. We woke late again after a disrupted night of sleep. Mark's phone went of at midnight and the TV turned itself on at about 3am. Gremlins??? The sun was out this morning so we decided to make the most of this and head to the TeleferiQo cable car. The view as we ascended the 2,5km up the side of Volcano Pichincha was spectacular as we passed up through the tree line to the grassy peaks of the summit. We did see some other Aussies by the way....a la...

Excelent vallue 4 star hotel

from Citylaw
We stayed here one night before and one night after embarking on a Galapagos cruise, so we had two different rooms. The hotel presents a very pleasant appearance, with a nice marbled entry lobby, helpful staff and an overall very good impression. Our first night was in a standard room, quite large and clean. The only problem was that it was on the second floor directly above a night club which did not close until 2:30 and "treated" us with boom-box music. Edith did not like the pillows. The second night was in a mini suite and quiet, leaving a much better impression. There was enough closet and drawer space to stay a week or two. The rate was $80.00 per night with VAT taxes bringing this to $100.00; still a superb value. We ate at the restaurant and found the service excellent and the food quite good; delicious in fact. [Stick to fish in Ecuador - they have a lot and do it right].] A meal for two with one glass of wine and one dessert came to $35.00. The hotel provided free puickup at the airport and free shuttle (via taxi voucher in one case earyySunday morning) back. It is a $5.00 taxi ride to the Old City; and $4.00 to the airport if you have to use a taxi, whcih we did because our flight back from Galapagos was early. You have to notify the hotel of your airport pick-up time which involved a phone call to Quito since I was unable to get a response to my e-mail attempt. If this is a problem - skip the pick-up, and grab a cab at the airport.

This is a highly recommended hotel.

Ein 4-Sterne Hotel, das sein Geld ist

from Citylaw

from peflores

Good hotel but no internet

from peflores
The hotel is OK. If you stay here, ask for the junior suites since they offer a little bit more of space.

Cons? No internet! Wireless doesn't work and there is no cabe high speed connection in the rooms.

Bestes Hotel in Quito

from patitotigre

Hervorragendes Hotel

from 32807

from patitotigre

from 32807

Outstanding Hotel

from 32807
Just returned from a 4-night stay at the Dann Carlton Hotel Quito, and missing it already. This hotel is located in the area called Modern Quito, and is within walking distance of Carolinas Park, 2 shopping centers/malls, and numerous excellent restaurants, including many American fanchise/chain restaurants. There are Security personnel positioned at most businesses in all areas of Quito. We felt extremely safe walking all around the area where the hotel is located, but for personal reasons, do NOT recommend tourists doing so after dark. Taxis are very reasonably priced, and readily available. All of the hotel staff are excellent! You'll have no problem with language. The restaurant wait staff greet you by name after first visit. Daily maid service replenishes toiletries, water, cleans and changed bedding (triple sheeted bedding), without fail. Only possible item lacking may be air conditioning or heat. But at this time of year (June), the blankets on the bed felt good. Can't wait to return to Quito, and "The Dann".

Best Hotel in Quito

from patitotigre
Luxurious, quiet, and safe, the Hotel Dann Carlton is perhaps the best Quito has to offer. Hotel staff is not only professional but also extremely accommodating. Housekeeping does a superb job and pays attention to detail. The DC has a full bar with live music, restaurant and free internet cafe as well as several conference halls for business people. Centrally located, the DC is just minutes from the airport and downtown areas by taxi. You can buy fresh roses for pennies while enjoying Quito's largest and most beautiful park "La Carolina," which is located only a block away. Also nearby, you can find Quito's best-known steakhouse, "Los Troncos" where you can enjoy high quality South American cuisine at affordable prices. Two very large and modern malls, with internationally known boutiques, are within walking distance. The Hotel Dann Carlton is highly recommended!
