Dur.
... a little while to find another one as we couldn't fit our packs in with the subs and speakers a few of the tuk tuk's have in the back.
We got into Unawatuna after a couple of hours and after arguments with more tuk tuk drivers. We settled into a place called the Full Moon resort, literally on the beach. We payed a little bit more than usual for the room but definately needed ...
... of the vision I have imagined and hoped when I knew I was coming to Tangalle in the first place - because I wanted to live on the beach, but I didn't actually realise until I came over that I would be staying in Netolpitya as opposed to Tangalle. The owner Sue is quite over-protective and keeps telling me that I am a member of her family now! So the last couple of weeks have been a bit disruptive on the accommodation front but that should be ...
Unawatuna, Sri Lanka salcat... she was traveling to Colombo for a funeral. As it happened, we were without the prettiest pink saree, and really missed Alison on the day. So, we had our outfits! Lara, Allison and Geeth's friend and neighbour up the road, collected me. His wife, her friend and two other women were at Linda's, in readiness to help us gussy and glossy up. By the time I got to Linda's, she and her mum had their faces on, and their friend Pia was being made up. They ...
Unawatuna, Sri Lanka mariebee... and positive changes, but still there are signs everywhere of the destruction of the tsunami, including shells of houses by the beach. The clean up is taking a long time. In Sri Lanka, as well as India, I've often thought a waste-management company would clean up (so to speak) if they were able to bring their skills to these countries. The house I am staying at was built by my ...
Unawatuna, Sri Lanka mariebee... it was nice. Boxing Day is the anniversary of the tsunami. Unawatuna was severely affected and as such, a small ceremony was held on the beach. Also, the monks chanted. For two days straight. Amplified and broadcast on speakers along the main road near our guest house. For over 48 hours. At one point (at about 4 am on the 28th) someone must have passed out on the volume button: the volume went way up! I awoke thinking a monk on a bullhorn was just outside my door. I often hear ...
Unawatuna, Sri Lanka mioww... from anywhere, to anywhere in the world. I came back to the lodge and just chilled with the family for my last evening with them. Uma was trying to book me on a five-day tour of Lanka. It includes all travel by private taxi and accommodation with two meals a day. Because I would be on my own I would have to pay all the taxi charges, this meant the whole package was working out at £225 plus entrance fees to various places. Total around £275 or Rs47 575. Basically that's a lot of ...
Galle, Sri Lanka harvimalhi... It was really bumpy sitting in the front seat and incredibly hot with the heat from the engine filtering through. It was quite a cheap adventure since the jeep and entry to the park cost just £25 but at the time seemed really expensive. What I didn't understand was the staff at the park taking entrance payments didn't have any change for the notes I and all the other foreigners were using. As I learnt, a Rs.1000/- note is something a lot of retailers don't like ...
Galle, Sri Lanka ramdux... 7, it all kicked off. Mrs R got it into her pretty little head that what had been missing from Mr R's measly 15kg backpack is a 6'x 4' St George's cross advertising the worst team in the football league and confirming that Mr & Mrs R are, indeed, ON TOUR! So, off we headed into the hills behind our hotel to find a seamstress willing to put together such a concoction. In an episode reminiscent of the Stone Henge scene in This Is Spinal Tap ...
