... 20 years ago as it is right in the centre of Austria, but not recently. The ladies on the bus were horrified and most indignant. Still took a little while to get out of the town and into the wilds and we were in light drizzle. Eventually had to submit to the rain jacket - the first time we have had to wear them for weeks. Track went past a ski area with lifts and lots of chalets and snow making equipment. This was fairly open country, but the animals had all been taken down ...

Passed the famous Chorinskyklause, another of the log dams. Think it must just be famous in Austria as I could find no reference to it on the net in English. It was in a lovely spot though and just below it the river went through a narrow gorge with falls. Finally made our destination at ...

... lake (Schwarzensee) at 716 m. A small and pretty lake that freezes over in winter. Trail fairly level round the lake and up to an open moor type area, then headed down through an amazing gorge that had rivers entering from all directions. Would be quite spectacular when the snow was melting in spring. Descent was very steep, but only for a short distance, then levelled out. Ended up at another lake (Attersee) at about 470m. This is ...

... be over 2,000 meters above sea level for the 5 Fingers lookout) ate breakfast and were in a cab by 8:30. We reached Obertraun around 8:50, bought our tickets for the ice caves and 5 Fingers, which is higher up the mountain beyond the ice caves and caught the 9:00 a.m. Dachstein Krippenstein cable car 1,350 meters up. What we found particularly cool, was all of the elderly hikers who joined us on the ride up. Many had to be in their late 70s and with walking poles in hand they were ...
