... happy, and helpful in the face of continual military patrols, and presence of the PRC military in every facet of life from watching over the holy places from rooftops to controlling access to different parts of the city. It was the first time for either of us in a location with this kind of restrictions and very eye opening.
Hope all is well

Met Emma and Jason and we clicked right off, the others very standoffish

Wondered how I would go walking up stairs 998 of them and was ok, took it slowly
Felt for guide as the place is obviously very very old and was ...
... are top notch, the buildings spik and span, the streets clean, tidy and the whole place is, well, rather boring. Yet while the Chinese have given most of Lhasa a good wash down with their 1st world detergent they have left some of the old heritage sites in place (albeit now with glazed ticket offices and parking spaces).
For some thrills and kills a gander round the local market is always set impress. From butchers hacking away at open Yak skulls, to plucked pigs heads ...
... Lhasa on the day we left for Shigatse, with 30-40 trucks backing up along the highway causing the chaotic Tibetan traffic to come to a standstill. We also saw a few people having their cameras and photos confiscated - having taken a picture of the miliarty, or of the many sights where no photos are allowed. Lhasa is certainly a city governed by rules and restrictions and even as visitors there for a short while we felt the pressures and ...

Before entering the Chanting Hall we went into the kitchen. Outside the kitchen two monks were preparing some food. Inside there were two more monks preparing something that looked like a brown vase made of food (tofu?) and using white (tofu?) to create floweres to decorate the vase. The only thing that Pasang could explain is that it is an offering for Vijaya.

... on Monday. We were going to use the internet, but it was 38 yuan, so we passed. We boarded on time and were in the air before 8:00 am on the Air Bus 330. I dozed off for 10 or 15 minutes and then they started the service. We were served breakfast - a bun, gruel (rice porridge) with pickled radish, cold cucumber and beef salad and melon. I had some water and tea, Bill had water. They handed out headphones, but we did not use them. I am sure that there was no ...

Lhasa, Tibet, China happysheep... Lama on your person while in Tibet, and any demonstration of any kind along the lines of 'Free Tibet' would be incredibly stupid. There is obvious military presence around Lhasa, including snipers on roof-tops and shield carrying soldiers in the area around Jokhang Temple (usually walking counter-clockwise!). The Drepung Monastery is up in the hills of Lhasa, and is a large complex once home to thousands of monks. Now, sadly, there are only about 700 monks ...
Lhasa, Tibet, China fifoota... on Chinese pop stars, where everything from the great monasteries to the secret police was run by old Tibetan quislings from the Cultural Revolution. A new governor was installed, fresh from crushing religious and cultural separatism in neighbouring Qinghai province. That was Tibet as I found it: filth, old and new. And now I understood why the monk, and so many others, had told me not to go to Shambhala. If I did ever reach it, and find my own Shambhala, I would probably be more ...
