Perhentian Islands

Thursday 22nd May We got an early taxi from Kota Bharu to the ferry port. We then caught the fast boat over to the smaller of the two Perhentian Islands, called Kecil. We met a real character on board the ferry called Bill who reccomended we stay in D'Lagoon (The quieter side of Kecil). We were not disappointed on arrival. The sea was an amazing colour and really warm. The hostel we stayed in was the only hostel on this side of the Island and was based right on the beach front, ideal. We chec...

Perhentian Islands

Ah, now this is what I am talking about, paradise islands. It is truely beautiful here and really relaxed. It was another long travel day to get here from Taman Negara (boat, bus, jungle train (21RM, okay, not that special. some nice jungle views and a good view of Golung Tahan on the way up). taxi). We over-nighted in Kota Bharu and got a taxi to Kuala Besar the next day and the speed boat over to Kecil. The Perhentian islands consist of a big island and a small island (Kecil). Kecil has mor...

Perhentian Kecil

Spectacular group of Islands. Giant turtles, Reef sharks, abundant coral and marine life. An amazing place, but basic accomodation.

Paradise for under C$200/week

It's true. As usual, I write down what I spend but generally refuse to total it. However, mental math is safe here. With my own ocean-view room, 3 meals a day and too many coconut-pineapple shakes, snorkelling trip and water taxis and even the very occasional beer, I do believe I spent less than C$200 in 8 days of heaven. Gotta love Asia. And I hear the prices just get better as you go to Vietnam and Cambodia and Laos and Thailand... as planned. Lonely Planet describes the Perhentians as a "w...

... bathroom, but not a day went by when we didn't see a frog in there, owing to the easily-enterable gaps between the wooden slats on the window. On the day we arrived, there was Freddy, nonchalantly hugging the soap dish with his spindly fingers. I wasn't sure what to do with him, so I just left him there. The next day, however, Freddy was joined by a much larger friend. The electricity never came on until 6pm, as it runs off a generator, and as ...

Please sir can we have some more!!

... supply is via generators. Most places only supply electricity between the hours of 7pm and 7am and the water supply is often quite limited. There are 2 islands which make up Perhentian. One is known as the big island and the other.......you guessed it, is known as the small island. The big island is made up of all the larger posher resorts and the smaller island is the backpackers party island with all the budget (****) accommodation. We of course chose the budget island ...

Beware of Sharks on Land

... that the back of the boat had the most weight, which meant that it pretty much never got air when the first part of the boat hit the top of the waves. Every time the boat hit the top of a high wave, it's front part got air, and lots of it. Everytime it got air, it hit the water which felt like it was hitting solid concrete. Quite understandably it wasn't very comfortable sitting up there. Everytime we hit the water I felt like my liver was going to get crushed in between my ...

Up with the larks to see some sharks.

... only 6 got accommodation, fortunately we were one of the lucky 6. For the remainder of the day we watched boat loads of people being turned away from hostel after hostel with many people having little choice but to return to the mainland or sleep on the beach. It is easy to see why the Perhentians are a popular destination however – another small jungle covered island with white coconut tree ...

... 8221; “red,” etc. when we wanted to pick a place to eat. Other than the lack of food chose, the Perhentians is pretty much paradise on earth. At least, in my opinion, once you get a room with AC and solid floors and walls.

Once we got to the mainland town of Kuala Besut from our boat ride, we waited around town (town is a very loose term, it’s more like village) and ate dinner until our bus was ready to depart. Paying the price

... on our underwater camera..... right before our underwater camera decided it wasn't waterproof and became toast. A HUGE disappointment as it was not cheap and would have been nice to have for the rest of the our journeys..... but hopefully will be covered by warranty. But....turtle pics are still intact I believe. From turtle point we went on to snorkel with some sharks!!!!! They were actually pretty cool.....if not extremely intimidating. They were black tip sharks of ...

Relaxing in Pulau Perhentian Kecil, Malaysia

... a snake or two, iguanas and other creepy-crawlies.

Impiani is situated on the southern part of the Small Island and hence, is rather isolated. All meals are served a-la carte at its main restaurant and we quite enjoy the delicious food. Our chalet is spacious and air-conditioned, with a huge balcony facing the beach. I spent most of my time reading on the balcony when Argi went for his diving trips. Electricity is switched off ...
