After leaving Interlaken we travelled into France. We had wanted to get to Lourdes, one of the gateways to the Pyrenees, in one day which seemed pretty feasible looking at our Eurail Map. In checking with the Railway though it turned out that the only way to get to Lourdes in one day was through Paris. If you want to pull out your atlas you can see just how out of the way this route is. It would have taken 16 hours so we opted for a two day trip stopping in the University town of Montpellier....

Plan was to stay in Avignon but when we arrived we decided it was too big for us and after driving around the outide of the ramparts of the old city walls - very cool and the main thing we wanted to see - we made our way onwards to Fontaine de Vaucluse which is 20kms past Avignon. We arrived just before dark and found an Aire de Service at the edge of town where settled in for 2 days. The town ...
Fontaine-de-Vaucluse, Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur, France darrenhough74... English in the entire town. We found our hostel super late at night (and they don't make hostels in France like they did in Spain... no more free internet!). The next morning, we walked into town not really knowing what to see or do. But as we were looking for a quick Petit Dejuner (breakfast) we stumbled upon the Saturday market. We sat at a cafe on the square and had the most amazing breakfast 5 euro can buy if you ...

Arles, Provence, France 2totango... Aix...oh, the Brits abroad, mon dieu! Still, best 6€ I've ever spent. We've also been along to the cinema. Embarassingly, it was to see Fame but I'd like to point out how important cinema, and going to the cinema, is to the French. There are at least 3 cinemas in Aix, and there are huge film posters everywhere. 'Le Cezanne', has it's name lit up, and, unlike at home, the seats are like armchairs and there's plenty of leg room. But, like at home, it's bloody ...

Avignon, Provence, France qyzhang... I wasnt quite sure of the time but I guessed it was midnight, even if I got to Montpellier it would have been almost impossible to find my host as public transport was required and cars were unlikely to be a usefull means of making passage within the city. I resolved to find a suitable spot to sleep which I did promptly, there was a field behind a petrol station which was ok. I took out my sleeping bag and spent the night under the stars:
