... Vyborg and the border we drove alongside the Saimaa Canal. It's a canal that connects the southern lakes of Finland with the sea at Vyborg. We passed a number of locks and quite a big ship with logs on it.

Most of our border crossing was straight forward. Russia stamped our passports, vehicle import paper and had a quick look inside. On the Finland side the first man told us we would have to remove the window tint on our side ...

    ... by now.

Back to the hotel for a bit over an hour before we headed off to have a meal prepared by the Sami people on their Reindeer farm. The farm was about 15 mins out of town. ... family debate on which way we are going (useful), and then we were off to Pyha, a ski resort where we would be staying for the week. Pyha is pronounced Pooha much to the amusement of the kids. Roads well snowploughed but still slippery, weather still snowing, darkness closing in (2.30pm), risk of encountering deers on the road (none sighted) as well as driving on the wrong side of the road- some of the difficulties faced by the drivers. Was relieved I ...

... was one puppy and he was particularly active. I felt sorry for them being locked up because they didn't have much room to move with three in a pen. We bought a couple of postcards at the post office, before heading back to Rovaniemi and farewelling Maria. After a quick break to gather our thoughts, we walked over to the other side of town to the arctic museum, which told the story of life in the Arctic Circle. Then it was back to the hotel for a quick meal and some much-needed ...
