Rovaniemi, Finland amatsinrake... i'll be good!! I arrived in Rovaniemi very refreshed after spending the night in a sleeper carriage for the long 14 hours train journey from Turku. For 12 Euros with a rail pass (you won't find a better bargain than this in Scandinavia!!) you can get a triple bunk sleeper although the top bunk is not for those who suffer ...
Rovaniemi, Finland sd0744... though;-) Luckily the village was all covered in snow making it feel very christmassy, even if the temps were still around the -2 degree mark. A week before we came it had been -25, but once again we had come at the time of a warm spell. We had the village pretty much to ourselves, as November seems to be decidedly quiet, with December being the biggest tourist month. We made our way to Santa's post ...
Rovaniemi, Finland bigbenn... magic. Last night the girls came to our place to dress up for Halloween (celebrated late here and only at bars), transforming ourselves with much hairspray, makeup and finds from the local second hand shop, into an 80's barstar (I even found a crimping iron for 1,50€!), alice in wonderland, a catwoman and Minnie mouse. Then we headed to Tivoli. I was so happy to see a few skeletons and pumpkins decorating the walls and stage, and how many people were dressed up. and we ...
Rovaniemi, Finland moonrise... been basically philosophical. Yikes. So now here I am, trying to write a master's thesis in a program that is NOT philosophy or really anything close to it, and facing the prospect of applying to do a PhD in philosophy having NEVER TAKEN A SINGLE PHILOSOPHY COURSE. Ya, yikes. Of course the journey has taught me a lot, but still, I'm sure that if fate is somewhere behind a 2-way mirror with a clipboard watching me, she is shaking her head in ...
Rovaniemi, Finland moonrise... the book, and I am taking it all with a rather large chunk of salt. Still, I see nuggets of wisdom and interesting paths to explore, and it is just so interesting to reread from this 5-year-later perspective. It is like when I reread Ishmael by Daniel Quinn, the other book I read for the first time in 2001 that was instrumental is my whole worldview shifting beneath my feet like an earthquake - I can see why it impacted me so much back then, and I am thankful and proud of ...
Rovaniemi, Finland moonrise... like home and the terrain looked like home - including enjoying the blueberries on the trail. Much to our surprise, it was very warm by the time we reached the bottom of the hill, and we were both sorry not to have our swimsuits with us when we walked by a beach full of people enjoying swimming in the Ounaskoski river. PS: We are squinting like mad in all the outdoor photos because it is so bright at the Arctic Circle this time of year.
Rovaniemi, Finland asjoman... seems to annoy you. 57. You seriously consider visiting the sauna more than three times a week. a few of my own... you text message the person you were just talking to in person to tell them what you really wanted to say... you start waking up at 7am paniced because your body feels it must be after 11am for it to be this light... you no longer secretly laugh at the people riding around on wooden sledges that look straight out of the ...
Rovaniemi, Finland moonrise... the ground! Anyway...we went to see Santa in his grotto. We kinda expected a big lead up to him, with elves and fairly lights and just stuff...you know what i mean. But there was none of that, just some photos on the wall of Santa with some people who had been to visit, including people in shorts(!) and John Cleese! So we went and had a chat with Santa and told him were good ...
