... Makke’s wife, Olga, made a wonderful dinner of grilled sausages along with potatoes and salad. Topping things off, we moved to their enclosed gazebo for some Finnish pancakes (almost like crepes) as dessert. Stuffed to the gills, we waddled to the car for the 10-minute drive back to Helena’s mom’s house.

On Tuesday the 10th, our last full day there, Hoki and I decided to put on a dinner for the entire family. After ...

... how to bake. As the coffee shop is a period piece, it’s like going back in time to the turn of the 19th Century and walking into someone’s home. Very nice.

On the veranda of the coffee shop, they had an exhibit of watercolor painting by my ex-sister-in-law, Terttu Kivisen. Terttu was the first wife of Markku, Helena’s brother. While I’m a photographer and not a painter, I couldn’t speak to her technique ...

... The shorn hay fields were bathed in a rich golden light and there was still warmth to the air. Summer was still here for at least another day. By the time we returned to the house my son, Mikael, and expecting girlfriend, Jutta, had arrived. We chatted for about an hour then they left. Mikael still had work to do on this thesis, and he only had three weeks until Jutta’s due date. Hmmm. I wonder which one will be done ...
