... get in the van and it leaves for Cape Coast, the place I thought was right outside of Accra that's actually 90 minutes outside of Accra. Problem is, by the time we are in the van it's about 3:30, and the canopy place closes at 4. I'm not a math major but I don't think we are going to get there in time. So about 45 minutes into the van ride I'm dying and I ask the driver to pull over so I can pee. Mind you, this guy is driving like a psycho, its a ...

Life of a Volunteer - Week 1

... often spicy. The best so far was last night: Fufu with groundnut (peanut) stew and fish. And now that my stomach has had a bit of a chance to acclimatise, I'm tentatively trying street food when it looks cleaner or freshly-cooked. The best has been the Kelewele: fried ripe plaintain with spices and optional peanuts (groundnuts). The pineapple is also fantastic here. Today I went to a nearby hilltop town called Aburi, and spent the day wandering around the botanical gardens there ...

... talking to me after this.

I noticed this of a lot of men along my run (I happened not to see any women along the way). People tended to laugh at me when I continued our conversation to the point of saying ‘Good and you?’after I was beginning to pass them. It’s possible that it’s just pretty rare for people to return a question here. Seeing as, I have never heard the twi phrase for ‘and you?’ Or maybe it&#8217 ...

July 6 Day 6 Sightseeing in Accra

This morning's breakfast was made by the cook but was not as good as the one yesterday made by night desk clerk. Today we decided that we needed hot water and moved to a new hotel. Moussa assured us that this one would be better; it did have hot water but the beds were not as nice. After moving hotels we went to the market.

What an experience of sights and sounds. Every booth was colourful and the venders very interested in two white folks coming to look at ...

Leaving on Jet Plane

... Yesterday morning, at 4, I watched the sun coming up from the hostel. There is a market directly across from the hostel, and people were already starting business by 5am. They try and get an early start, because the it gets quite hot during the day, and the sun goes down around 6.
Yesterday, we took a tour of Accra, Ghana's captial. We went to the W.E.B. Dubois museum (an early pan-africanist), the National museum (with has many exhibits from ...

Cool Rhythms and Troublesome Girls

... The soup was sticky, like……you know how a raw egg looks when you try to pick it up? All stringy, yeah, like that. It kinda creeped me out. But I got over it and the soup actually tasted okay. Brother taught me how to eat fufu. You’re supposed to cut it with your index and middle finger, and then scoop it up and twirl it to get rid of the stick stringy part, then put it in your mouth and swallow. You just…..swallow (I had trouble with ...

Finally in Ghana!

... Gifty. We waited.......and waited.......and waited for Uncle Sulley. Another thing my brother's book was right about, GMT no longer means Greenwich Mean Time. It means Ghana Maybe Time, lol. We had to be at the performance place at 3:30, and he ended up picking me up at 3:15. I left my things in the compound cause we didn't have time to load up. So I got in the taxi, met Uncle's friend, Alfred, and we were on our way. We took Aunty to a bus stop so she could get home faster ...
