... telling us all the different routes to take, and a man one recumbent bike ( lazy person, as Elly calls them) showing us the way to the supermarket when we were low on water and had no food. We've also been very impressed with the French Rhine route signs today although it should be straightforward following canals for most the day, the bits in towns are all signposted well and had no problems. He's been showing the photos to many people, mainly in a quest for identification and they have all been so interested to see them, even the ones of the bombed out streets. Our guide told us of how Alsace has been passed between the Germans and the French many times during the past few hundreds years. She explained some of the architecture of the the town- why some districts were built closer to the old enclosure than others, or why a hat maker ...

... for over an hour and a half and saw no one. not a soul. We did learn that the supermarket opens at 8am the next morning. We also learned that General de Gaul visited the church in Erstein to attend midnight mass Christmas Eve 1944.

Eventually we trudged back knowing we had burnt our boats and the hotel bar/restaurant would now be closed. And then we saw the kebab shop. Joy. And actually the kebabs were lovely and the charming chap even sold us beers too. And he offered ...
