KYKKOS MONASTERY



The monastery of Kykkos, is the richest and most lavish of the monasteries of Cyprus, found in the region of Marathasa. It is situated on the mountain peak, at an altitude of 1.318 metres northwest of Troodos. It is dedicated to Panagia(Virgin Mary), and was founded sometime between the end of the 11th century, and the beginning of the 12thcentury.

Happy 6th Birthday to Zak. Caught the shuttle but into town which was a long way from the ship and it was quite hot, so we didn't walk. On the drive to Limassol we decided to
take the detour through the Troodos mountains in hopes of seeing some
nice scenery and perhaps the painted churches of Troodos.

14.04.09 Up early again and off in a bus for tour of Curium a Roman site of importance with ruins from ancient structures, which were demolished by an earthquake and have been parially restored. ... does have a lot business but her customers are not take care as they should. Talking to Richard, I told him that Jayne's time for leaving on her old visa is up February 15. He told me that the government dragged its feet in getting one of his workers (who is from Cuba) his visa and it cost him (meaning Richard) $200. This might happen with Jayne. I think it's deliberate so the government can make an extra $200. What crooks!

We set off quite early to drive up to the Kykos Monestary, one of the more famous monestaries high up in the mountains where Archbishop Makarios retired to and is buried (he was the first and fourth president of Cyprus). After 4 days of continuous travel to different cities and countries a day close apart and waking up early at 6 a.m. for the past 3 days, we welcome the day at sea - to rest and relax until the much awaited day for Egypt! Tonight was our second formal night and it was nice to dress up & take lots of pictures of the group inside the ship.

The first President of Cyprus, Archibishop Makarios the 3rd started his ecclesiastical career here as a monk in 1926.His request to be buried there materialized after his deathin 1977. His tomb lies 3 km west of Kykkos monastery and remains a popular visitor destination.
