We left the house to begin our voyage to the other side of the world at 12:00 EST on Monday. At 6am Beijing time on Wednesday, the trip was finally over. With the time change and the International Date Line, it can be hard to figure out exactly what that means in terms of hours. It was 29 long hours to get here.
It's a long travel day, but considering you get off the plan 15,000+ miles from where you started, it’s something of a minor miracle.
The trip was fairly uneven...

... out of there. It was interesting maze of alleys though as there were lots of very small cafes, shops, backyards and most of the houses had big flash cars. The people seemed to be using public toilets which were located about every 100m. We had a really nice lunch. Quite confronting when presented with a Chinese menu and couldn't read a word. The waitress was very helpful and brought us an English menu.
Beijing, China carolyn09... bloody buggers. Not a single other westerner on the subway. It was really strangs having al he locals staring at me. When I got off the train I asked for some directions. One guy followed me al the way there. Couldn't decide if he was just being polite, helpful, waiting for a chance to mug me, or just wanting a tip. Didn't give him one though. Had about as much luck at this station as the last. I managed to find someone who spoke English, asked him where to buy tickets to ...
Beijing, China dubasfisher... delight Tom had arranged a car to pick us up at 10am so after a good sleep we all clambered into our car which drove us to the first section of the wall - the Badalang section. The Great wall is divided into various sections to more easily allow for regulation of tourists, and although the 40 Yuan to access the wall and the 60 Yuan to use the cable car is not exactly expensive (about 10 pounds in total) it has a very distinct tourist ...
Beijing, China jamesburford... any Americans even said "Thank you"? Oh, there are plans to make the National Aquatics Center a viable community center: water slides, wave pool, fitness club, but there have to be a few city planners looking at the place as though it were an empty bottle of overpriced XO. Chickens may be coming home to roost at the Bird's Nest, sooner than later. Stadiums generally make money only if they are home to a major sports team. The s-word and f-word in China right now refer to ...
Beijing, China happysheep... to go to the Blue Zoo - an aquarium with the largest saltwater escalator tunnel thingy (not sure what they're actually called!) in Asia. This sounds more impressive than it is, although some of the fish were pretty impressive looking. However to get there was slightly more complicated than it appeared. Our guide book said that it was at the south-west corner of the worker's stadium - sounds easy enough..... Not when the stadium is under construction!! We ...
Beijing, China ciara.mcp... we walked thru a Chinese market, where we saw everything from meat and fish to fruits and vegetables. Very fun to see all the interesting things they were selling! In the afternoon, we and the Hauptmann's (mother and younger daughter) took a cab down to another Hutong district-- this one more up-and ...
Beijing, China petertadams... trundle past. The floor smelt damp as everyone had clothes drying on hand rails that ran down the hallway but the room had a shower & beds in it which was all that we were bothered about. Ahhhh to dump our bags & peel our soggy clothes off to jump into the shower & just veg on the bedm even though all we'd done was travel we were knackered. Woke up about 3 hours later, thought about checking out the city or even the hostel but nope zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz zzz
Shanghai, Shanghai, China pumpkinqueen... take us through Tiananmen Square, and the Forbidden City. It was really really really cold but very interesting. We saw the place where Chairman Mao is buried. You could go in and have a look if you wanted, but your not allowed to bring any bags or cameras and at 8.30am the cue was already huge with Chinese people lineing up to have a look. After the forbidden city we went to some park that has a huge statue of Budda up on the top of a ...
