... a good few degrees cooler than on the coast. We usually walk for an hour which takes us nicely to the tea house called Hortensia. This is a great refreshment stop with tea/coffee, light snacks, which could include their huge slice of apple cake, as well as a toilet stop. The views down across the city and over the harbour are great. The route could be cycled as it is flat ...

There is ample parking alongside the beach area of Praia Formosa. Take a right turn out of the car park and the constructed walkway is obvious. Very easy walk (even in trainers) to the west and continue past the beach cafes. The walk to Camara do Lobos takes about 50 minutes and the views as one enters the fishing port are the ...
Socorridos Valley - Levada do Curral Not Recommended - This walk starts from just below the Madeira Shopping complex. A wonderful hotel.
Stayed at this hotel for a week in july 2004 with family, just wish it could have been longer. Everything was perfect. Would definatly recomend the bbq lunch at the pool bar as it was delicious (i had this most days!) also if you have time it is definatly worth the ride to the mountains on the cable car, just remember to take your camera.
Would definitely reccommend
Stayed at the Crowne Plaza for a week starting 11th September 2004. We found the hotel to be absolutely wonderful, the views from the rooms and the hotel itself were amazing. The pools and 'jetty' into the sea were fabulous with crystal clear waters, diving facilities are also available. As the weather can get quite hot the breeze from the sea was very welcoming. The staff were always helpful, and food was of a good quality at all times. Good choice of bars including a pool side bar, cocktail bar and Irish bar (that do good food). We participated in the Thalassotherapy treatments, which were good and reasonably priced and also the horse riding facilities that took us into the hills of Madeira. Would definitely reccomend and would definitely go back.
This hotel exceeded our expectations....
We stayed at this hotel 19th - 23rd September 2004, booked on the strength of the reviews found in Trip Advisor. We certainly were not disappointed as the service, accommodation and location were absolutely perfect for our holiday. Our large, airey room overlooking the Ocean was a real treat and the breakfast and dinner buffets were all superb. My favourite treat was eating breakfast outside, overlooking the gardens and the water - this is one hotel we would definitely want to visit again.
This was a hotel that made us feel special from beginning to end. 5 days on the 6th floor with a view from the bed across the sea. Our room had 2 double beds, sofa and an armchair a trouser press, iron and ironing board. The sound from the television is played into the bathroom which contained a set of robes and a pair of slippers each and scales for us to check how well our diets were going!!
Spent a wonderful week at the Crowne Plaza Funchal from 26 July 2004 to 2 August 2004. 2 Adults 49, 54 plus two sons 20 and 16. (Were due to have gone to Mexico but had to cancel due to family illness so this was booked within 7 days of travelling - Excel Airways via Atlantic Holidays from the UK)
Great friendly hotel
stayed at this hotel for a week and enjoyed every minute of it made us feel extremely welcome even after knocking us out of euro 2004 they were apologetic , celebrated my 40th birthday here and found a complimentry cake and bottle of champagne in our room when we arrived also they gave us a free upgrade. breakfast buffet was always well stocked and hot fresh eggs cooked to order loads of fresh fruit , the hotel has a geat restaurant called wild orchid serves extremely good food , only one downside if you get a taxi from the airport they all think they are nigel mansell hold on tight , if you go make sure you have a dinner show at the casino great food (5 courses) as much wine you drink while eating then a great show all for 44 euros book through the hotel no hassle
This is a non-pompous but luxurious hotel a short walk from the town centre. What I loved the most was the size of the rooms, the sense of silence and privacy, excellent views; the magnificent breakfasts including plenty of fresh fruit, the non-obstrusive but ever helpful staff; attention to detail in fruit at the check in, complimentary water in the rooms, towelling robes. Mainland Madeira doesn't have sandy beaches (at least from what I saw around Funchal), but this hotel has a jetty and steps directly into the temperate, turquoise transparent waters, in which you can swim with tiny fish. Alternatively there are the pools, ofcourse. I particularly enjoyed early morning work outs in the gym, followed by a sauna, an indoor swim, followed by breakfast, and a day of leisure... I can't wait to go back
Room with a view
We recently returned from a weeks holiday at the Crowne Plaza. Spacious family room with ocean view and decent balcony. Spacious bathroom. The style of the hotel is very modern but light and airy, but impersonal.
Staff efficient in most areas, although table clearing at breakfast could be improved. The breakfast buffet however is very comprehensive with plenty of fresh fruit and vast selection of breads etc as well as cooked dishes. The swimming pool area is very well run with ample chaises longues, towels, umbrellas etc. Alsogood light lunches available. The road behind the hotel is very busy and the great advantage of this hotel, unlike many others, is that all the bedrooms face the ocean on the quiet side, so there is no traffic noise.
They have a dive centre
A modern hotel with a diving center attach to it, so within two steps you also can enjoy the unique Madeira sea live
This is very nice accomodation that is on the tourist hotel zone of estrada monumental. Surrounded by coffeshops, restaurants, car hire places and 20mins walk from the town. It is definitely an ideal place to stay at. The food was great. Very fresh fruit. And the people were warm, friendly and helpful. Room service was excellent, and relatively inexpensive. Mini bar always stock, and you get complimentary water, tea, coffee and even herbal tea complimentary! Very clean and efficient. Excellent overall. If you are there, be sure to go to the left of the hotel, walk about 500m and get to a little bakery called the Boutique Lido. So many yummy cakes to try, so little time to try it all....
