Historical Traveler Reviews of Crowne Plaza Hotel Manchester Airport
Not up to Scratch
from kingedgy
I stayed here on a park and fly package prior to my vacation. The exterior looked dull and uninspiring whilst the interior was tired and shabby. Particularly the carpets along the corridors which had been patched up in numerous places. Surely a hotel worthy of the Crowne Plaza brand name would warrant new carpet rather than patching.
The room was okay with the features you would expect from this brand. The bar food was alright but expensive for what it was.
The pool and leisure facilities were again nothing more than average.
This hotel in my case adequately served a purpose. That was to provide two weeks car parking and a room for the night prior to my flight departure.
Its close proximity to the airport terminal and complimentary bus transfer were fine.
I suspect the nearby Raddison SAS might prove to be a more agreeable option for a small additional cost.
Not a Four Star hotel!

Stayed in this hotel last weekend and having read the reviews posted on this site, thought I'd add a few words. The hotel is okay, clean with a good level of service from staff. The shuttle to and from the terminal was quick and efficient with friendly staff. The problem with this hotel is that it is not a four star hotel as the Crowne Plaza brand is supposed to be. I had stayed in an Express by Holiday Inn the previous night and despite this being the budget brand, the hotel itself was much nicer - room was spacious and modern in comparison to the room I had in this hotel. In fairness, the room was big enough but it was very dated and in need of refurbishment. The Bewleys hotel next door appeared to be very modern despite its lower grading.
Park & Fly

I have recently stayed at the Crowne Plaza - Manchester Airport prior to an early flight with my family.
The room was large enough and adequate - without being spectacular. Its Ok for a night but you wouldn't want to stay for a long period. The staff are friendly and the Park & Fly Package much better than parking at the airport for 2 weeks.
Breakfast is very good with everything as a buffet and open from 04:30 am, which is useful if catching an early flight.
The Sampans restaurant is very good - Thai / Chinese Food - however a bit pricy.
Its worth using if you are a Priority Club member - as your room is upgraded and you are given a complimentary half bottle of wine, fruit and drink in the bar.
All in all - its acceptable - not the best Crowne Plaza I've ever stayed in but ok especially as a stopover hotel.
An embarrasement to the Crown Plaza chain

Quite why this hotel was re-branded Crowne Plaza I am at a loss. Experience of Crowne Plazas generally creates an expectation of a 4* standard hotel with all the facilities and staff to match. This Crowne Plaza is clearly still in the dated 3* Posthouse era. From the outside looks like it should have been pulled down years ago as an example of the appauling 60's concrete buildings that blight much of the UK.
There is a courtesy bus to the hotel - takes about 15 mins to arrive and just a short drive to the hotel. In the morning this 6 seater cannot cope with the demand - on checking out there was about 40 people waiting for it ! It was quicker to give up and walk the few hundred yards to the airport.
Rooms are clean - but incredibly small - especially the bathrooms. Basically one person can walk round the room at a time - the other has to sit on the bed whilst you do so. If you need to open a case or use the ironing board it requires nerves of steel and military precision. Air-con on last legs and not effective - windows open though.
Check in and out can take ages - luck of draw on how busy it is. Reception staff friendly enough.
In view of other reviews we didn't bother with dinner and went out into Manchester - it's only a 15 min walk to the station and worth the effort. Breakfast was OK on the food front - but staff very surley - as they serve from 4.30am maybe this is the cause - but a smile and politeness costs nothing - too much for the staff though.
Overall - OK if you get a very cheap deal and are not too fusy for a quick overnight - but I'd strongly recomend trying another hotel here first - especially the Radisson - well worth the extra money for convenience and better rooms and staff.
Ideal location

We stayed here for 1 night before flying and left the car here for 2 weeks. We had interconnecting rooms for our 2 children. I was worried after reading some of the reviews but was pleasantly suprised. The staff at reception could'nt have been more helpful, even though the computers were down and they were having to do everything by hand. Everyone from the porter to the lady we had to hand our car keys in to, were cheerful and friendly.
The rooms were clean and although not particularly spacious were big enough for us.
We did'nt eat here but the breakfasts were extremely expensive so anyone staying(unless company expenses) may want to take something to tide them over.
Free transport to the terminal was a bonus, this took approx. 2 minutes.
When we arrived back we used the freephone and the minibus arrived in minutes. The driver was also a happy chap and went and collected our car keys, which he did'nt have to do, and took us straight to it.
Clean but tired on the outside!

Have stayed here on two occasions during April on business. The hotel looks very tired from the outside - definately needs updating - used to be the old Excelsior Hotel.
The rooms appear to have had a refurb - there is still the smell of paint lingering in the corridors. I'm a Priority Club member, so not sure if I get an upgraded room - but it has enough space, tea/coffee facilities, trouser press, iron, hairdryer etc.
Beware the bathrooms - they are very small - watch you don't bang your head on the door handle (you'll see what I mean if you stay there!)
Staff have been friendly - especially when ordering room service - always deliver promptly. Good value room service when compared to other hotels in the area. Food in the bar area quite restricted menu and not particularly cheap for burger type meals.
Reception staff are ok - seem short-handed sometimes - didn't help either last time when they couldn't find my reservation - 20 minutes later they found it!
In summary - not a bad place to stay, reasonable room size, staff ok, priced better than some of the other airport hotels - so up to you if you want to pay top price for better accom elsewhere.
Staff incredibly bad.......

Stayed overnight due to flight delay, Sat 11 am till Sun Food inedible kept lukewarm very low standard no service at all .Wanted to watch rugby international on tv Sat afternoon bar with tv not open went back to airport to watch it !!!!!!!!!. Rung for shuttle bus 4 times still did not arrive , complained when got back to hotel cold and having to walk and cross busy airport ,the staff member was so rude it defies description even though she later apologised it was a little late.
There was sign saying we would be woke at 6 am for flight which took off at 5pm told reception we did not want this ... guess what 5.55 am we were woken !!!!!!!!!!
The worst hotel in over 250 plus hotels i have ever stayed.
Poor, Over-Priced, Lousy Service
from A TripAdvisor Member
I have stayed at this hotel before and it fails to get better.
It was built as a Posthouse and has been rebadged as a Crowne Plaza in the last few years.
Sadly apart from a lick of paint it hasn't changed much.
It is still a very modest hotel. My room was tiny - not even space to open my suit-bag properly.
Service is surly and inefficient. I had occasion to speak to the 'manager' who was like an automaton - no sense of actually helping the guests.
I am a Gold level member of Priority Club - if this is how they treat there frequent guests, I worry for other guests. I had stayed at a Holiday Inn the night before which was actually better!
It is in an irritating location - just too far to walk to the airport - so there is the need to get the shuttle for a few minutes.
Spend a few pounds more and stay at the Radisson which is actually built into the airport and means no shuttle.
Intercontinental Hotel Group must do better than this. They can't just stick a new logo on old and tired hotels with inadequate staff. If they do they will de-value their brands very quickly indeed.
Good web deal
from A TripAdvisor Member
We stayed at the Crowne Plaza in August 2004, the night before we flew home. We found a web deal on the Crowne Plaza website for 60 pounds per night - I think it had to be booked at least 14 days in advance. It was a great way to end 2 weeks in the UK. The rooms are what you would expect from a Crowne Plaza, as is the service. The only drawback is that it is on the grounds of the airport so once you're there, you're basically stuck unless you want to cab it downtown. We just hung out at the pool (ok) and the bar (ok). The shuttle service to the airport was prompt. I would stay there again if I was flying in/out of Manchester.
Park and Fly - Good Value

We stayed here for one night and had 19 nights parking for £133. We booked direct with the hotel as our requirements could not be met by the various web-sites - 2 adults and 2 children. The room had a king size bed and two sofa beds with plenty of room to store our holiday luggage. The shuttle to the airport and back was very good - at 5 O'clock in the morning with one vehicle full the driver summoned another which arrived instantly - very impressive. The hotel is located on the airport which means you are minutes away from your terminal. You can not here the planes. The swimming pool is small and in need of updating but the reason for staying is to be at the airport and not for swimming!
