I felt asleep before 630 last evening, and got up at 5 this morning. What a sound sleep! And an amazing new noon arose outside my window. The prayer sound made the context really turkish.

Our lunch was at a resort with a lake. There were no other customers but us, the participants at the conference. It cost 20 lira, so maybe too expensive for local people.

Dinner was lighter, but i still couldn't finish it.
Izmir, Turkish Aegean Coast, Turkey mrduby... away as I found out after inquiry at the campus near the hotel. Surprisingly the university security staffs do not speak English. They're nervous talking to me! Haha, being a total foreigner in a distant country surely is an interesting experience. Youngsters should all try to do this. Anyway I decided to just walk around the downtown, Alcanti area to learn about local life. I assume once i start my conference tomorrow I'd have no time to do that. (It turned out ...

They turn out to be hospitable and er very american but not in an irritating way. They adopt me as their second token brit and a new zealand girl also hangs out with them. So we chat about travel and have a nice time
Izmir, Turkey i_could_walk... in anything in particular. However spotted a top I liked so grabbed that and by then we'd both had enough excitement and exited stage left. Then off back to the main part of town and found some more up market shops, interesting array of things for sale and the shop names were hard case...Salash Bags (knock off designer labels like Gucci & Prada). No bargains to be found though. Stopped for coffee at little cafe ...

Izmir, Turkish Aegean Coast, Turkey cotafamily4... down here. The hills are long, and sections are brutally steep; this is the first day in the trip where we have routinely jumped off the bikes to just push up the hill. The temperature might have something to do with this, hovering close to 40C - over 100F. And the wind is ripping. We drink a full water bottle every 45 minutes, stop for a break and drink another Liter or two, and we're still dehydrating. A long break in a shady restaurant while we convince ourselves to go ...
Izmir, Turkey imapilot... a cement staircase. Another ex-student was also visiting and we visited the Antalya museum. It has an amazing collection of statues of greco-roman gods and roman emperors and houses the Pheidippides Sarcophagus, the burial chamber of the first marathon runner. Antalya is definitley worth a visit if you're in the area with many historic buildings and a breathtaking view of the Taurus mountains from a look out point in Konyaaltý Park. An ideal place to spend an evening or two with ...
Izmir, Turkey michael_brombyBreakfast at our hotel is on a 2nd floor terrace overlooking the Cannakale waterfront. The setting is delightful; the meal is not. By 9am we are bouncing down the road towards the ancient city of Troy-at least the place dug up by a German, Heinrich Schliemann, who went on a quest for the legendary city of Troy in the late 1800's. He dug very clumsily, destroying much in his path, but did uncover the ruins of an ancient city that ...
