Historical Traveler Reviews of Crowne Plaza Hotel Cambridge (Cp)

Excellent Hotel

from A TripAdvisor Member
We stayed in this hotel for two nights in October 2004 to celebrate our 40th wedding anniversary. We didn't pay as much as other people have mentioned. The best place to book this hotel is on the Crown Plaza's own website. They guarantee the cheapest online price.

We couldn't find the hotel at first and drove round Cambridge for about an hour. I then telephoned them and asked where they were. They 'phoned me back on my mobile and then talked us to the hotel. When we arrived our bags were taken from us and we were then given a complimentary drink.

We thought this hotel was excellent and had no complaints whatsoever.

Another mediocre experience

from Rolmops
I stayed at this hotel 3 or 4 times over the past 3 years, the last time in mid-December 2004, and I was consistently disappointed. The rooms are unpleasant and too hot, because the windows don't open which allows you to enjoy the smells of hundreds of guests before you. The mattress is very hard and the pillows very soft; very uncomfortable. For breakfast, the buffet is unworthy of a Crowne Plaza hotel, with very limited choice and bad service.

Cambridge is not a good place for hotels overall, but try the Holiday Inn instead.

Consistently very good

from A TripAdvisor Member
I've stayed here 3 times and the hotel has consistently been excellent - very comfortable, clean, rooms truly smoke-free, etc. I don't know why others are giving it negative reviews; it is the only hotel in England that has consistently exceeded my expectations. Beds are American-style (firm and relatively flat).

Be sure to check out government employee rates (if applicable) and specials. Also, note that it is within walking distance of the Drummer Street Bus Station; you probably won't need a taxi after arriving on the bus from Gatwick.

Rough around the edges

from Aria00
I stayed at the Crowne Plaza for three nights in May 2004, the rooms were clean and comfortable, equiped with everything you need whilst you are away from home (I.e Mini bar, iron, trouser press, TV etc)

The hotel is perfect for location, but so overpriced for what you get.

The catering staff were incredibley rude and the bar staff not much better.

When you are paying over £190.00 a night, you do expect value for money, unfortunately you just don't get it at the plaza.

Clean and comfortable

A nice clean comfortalbe hotel with very helpful staff. Including providing restraunt recommendations and dircetions. There was a fire alarm during the stay and a letter of apology under the door the next afternoon. Centrally located with a nice buffet breakfast.

Good Chain Hotel

from one_spod
The Crowne Plaza Cambridge is a good, centralized option for exploring central Cambridge and the University areas. The hotel represents the Intercontinental chain well and provides good service that you would expect from a well run chain. Our only complaint was the heat, which obviously was beyond the hotel's control. A fan in every room would help, but in our case, the hotel was out of fans when we requested one.

However, I believe their claim that they tried to buy more but all of the stores were sold out during the recent heatwave. The breakfast buffet was exceptional in a time when "continental breakfast" can be the most deceiving descriptive term out there. A good choice for those looking for an above average chain hotel experience.

Great 4 star hotel

from dreamy
We love this hotel and have been back many times. The rooms are lovely and a good size though you need to be upgraded to get a view over cambridge- some of the rooms have views over the reception area. The breakfast is unbeatible, the staff are helpful and the hotel is located right in the centre. I would reccomend eating out in the evening as the hotel restaurant is nothing special and expensive- the Loch Fyne Fish Restaurant is just round the corner and is very nice. If you are choosing to stay in Cambridge this is definitely the best place

Enjoyable weekend

Last minute booking, central location, quiet inside rooms. Excellent cooked breakfast. Very helpful staff in reception.

Great stay

Wonderful stay, upgraded. Cannot fault the reservation organisers. Keep up the good work.

Crowne Plaza features high prices and shoddy service

from A TripAdvisor Member
The Crowne Plaza in Cambridge is in a very convenient location, but it suffers in service and price.

Among the faults of this hotel:

1. Staff do not answer email inquiries, either to book a room or to confirm a reservation.

2. Prices vary; two people travelling together can be charged two wildly different prices, and it's impossible to determine why.

3. Staff offer items which seem complimentary, but which are added to the bill.

4. Bell staff are inexperienced. They broke my luggage, and the hotel denies any responsibility.

5. The breakfast is a huge cost with little value -- go around the corner for a decent breakfast.
