Outback September 10-17. Landed in Darwin as planned, secured our rental car and began the engineering of fitting in all the bags. A Rubik cube would have been easier. Eventually everything fell into place and Ali-Kazam, we were on our way. We began our way to the Crowne Plaza Hotel effortlessly as our Garmin GPS took us to the precise location without a single wrong turn. Everyone was exhausted after a full day and we all headed for a good night sleep agreeing to leave the hotel at 8:00am (e...

Darwin, Australia leanneindisneyI checked out of Aspect Central at about 8:45am and caught a taxie for Cairns International Airport. The airport was a zoo! There were a number of flights to Melbourne and Sydney that were cancelled because of the wildfires down south and there were a lot of people milling around trying to get new flights. Fortunately, I was headed the opposite direction--to Darwin at the North End. My Jetstar flight for Darwin left on time at 12:45 pm. I sat next to an interesting fellow on the flight. He wa...
Darwin, Northern Territory, Australia pecten56The Motor Coach picked me up at the Crowne Plaza at 7:20 am. Our driver for this tour was Helen. We headed out of town on the Stewart Highway towards Litchfield National Park. We traveled through a town with a curious name--Batchelor. Gradually the developed areas gave way to the undeveloped and we headed into an area of that Helen termed Dry Tropical Woodland. Our first stop before we got to Litchfield was a little roadside cafe called the Banyan Tree. We had some morning tea and chatted for...
Darwin, Northern Territory, Australia pecten56It was still dark as Greg, our driver, picked us up at the Crowne Plaza in Darwin at 6:20 am this morning. We drove around to the other hotels and picked up the other tour participants and just as we were heading out of Darwin on the Arnhem Highway, the sun came up. Kakadu is a good drive from Darwin, so we stopped for some breakfast after we had been driving for about an hour. The roadside cafe we stopped at is called the Bark Hut. I had a coffee with a woman named Clair who is from Melbourn...

Today we made it down to the hotel's buffet breakfast just in time to wolf down a full fry up, and then it was back to bed again for the rest of the day! After last night's birthday celebrations we were both feeling the worse for wear, so we slipped back into our bathrobes, closed the curtains on the outside world and put the tele back on- well, we'd paid for the room so we might aswell make the most of it!
The only thing to report today was the fact that we splashed out on room service ...

... to pretty much be an all nighter at the airport to save booking a hostel for such a short night. I'm going to see Ice Age and Harry Potter tonight to entertain myself until my shuttle leaves at midnight. I've got something very exciting planned for Cairns though so if you don't know what it is already you'll have to wait to find out!
On a side note I've decided I'm eating too many 90 second noodles lately (not even 2 minute noodles how sad is that??) so I'm going to try to work on that.
... on the Victoria River. It was really nice but still stinking hot. I thought being nearly winter it would be ok, but so far the Northern Territory has been as hot & humid as WA. From here we did a drive into Bullita Homestead & Limestone Gorge (almost got there – the road was bad). M & I are both feeling like we haven’t done the Kimberley’s to our satisfaction and we both want to go back there & do it more thoroughly ...
Darwin, Northern Territory, Australia lavis... see the ring around it and it’s very own moon.
On the Saturday, it was Michael’s birthday and Dan’s last night, so we simply had to go on another night out! We went to the local Irish pub ’Kitty O’Shea’s’ and bumped into Kayleigh and Darren, a couple who we had met all the way down in Victoria and had kept in contact with ever since. We had a really great night and met all the people they had met since they arrived in ...
