Heat Finally

We just rode the rails of the famous Ghan train for 26 hours. We enjoyed Gold Kangaroo Service - a private cabin with convertible twin bunks and ensuite bathroom and great food served on linen table cloths with real cutlery. We saw our first kangaroos and emus from the train. the only down side was it was air conditioned way too cold that necessitated sitting in jackets or blankets. We disembarked noonish in Alice Springs in 40+ degree temperatures. Rather than wait for luggage, our transfer ...

Sunset, Champagne and Ayers Rock

Ayers Rock? What if the romance of it like the Stonehenge was more the sizzle than the steak. Somehow the solitary figure of Princess Diana silhoutted against the background of Ayers Rock never left me I guess. As I surfed the net, I realized that the best way to go was to fly. The train from Adelaide was an overnighter and though a drive would be quite an adventure, the time would not permit. Then it was a matter of flying directly there or perhaps to Alice Springs. Alice Springs , the outba...

Alice Springs

The Day in Alice Springs was spent primarily on a tour of the surrounding area, particularly two notable landmarks which we had flown over on our way in [No the CIA base was not one of them, I only violate national security once per vacation.] and the Royal Flying Doctor Service. First we visited the Royal Flying Dr. Service museum in town and had lunch. The Flying Dr. Service is an intricate part of allowing people to thrive in the remote "outback" of central Australia. The area is so remote...

Uluru to Alice Springs

The flight to Alice Springs From Uluru was one long leg. Despite this the views during this portion of the trip were incredible. We began doing the approved flight plan for aerial tours of Uluru and the Olgas. This is a proscribed flight path that traces a fairly complicated pattern between the two sites which are less then 20 miles apart. This trip allows one to have incredible views and photo opportunities of the two locations. . After the intensity of trying to stay on course through this ...

Flipped Off By a Wallabee

Thirty hours on board a train is about all I can handle in one sitting and my butt, brain and patience level had reached their limit by the time we rolled into Alice Springs. That is how long the journey from Darwin to Alice Springs took aboard The Ghan and that includes 4 hours in Katherine and then five hours in the middle of the night when the train just stopped and rested for whatever reason under pitch black skies. Katherine was the only train ...

... our day off with a very unique cinema experience.

That sums up all the touristy things that we got up to, we did have a couple of ‘rest days’ to recharge ourselves. Although staying in different caravan parks, we spent some good times with our new found friends (from our Daly Waters stay), the Leary family, and took it in turns to give each other the night off cooking! The meal cooking turned out to be the domain of ...

... have kept taking them up all the way. Luckily they turned around at the end of the chained bit. 35 people have died climbing it!

Next day, we drove out to the Olgas. Munna very graciously stayed with the boys while M&I did the Valley of the Winds walk. It was great. I would have dragged the boys along, but after days of bushwalking, they were more than happy to stay with Munna. Then we went back to Uluru ...

... br> Kalumburu is an aboriginal mission founded by a Spanish order of Benedictine monks in 1908 and is an oasis in some very hot and harsh country. This is a "dry" settlement and we were told we would have to leave all our alcohol at the police station and then collect it as we left. We duly arrived at the prearranged time only to find the station closed and no-one around.....the policeman had gone fishing! So we kept our booze ...

The entrance to Kangaroo Valley is over castellated Hamden Bridge which reminded us of London Bridge.

The county though is beautiful with lots of green rolling hills and pastures and very expensive houses with fantastic views over the escarpment to the sea.

The caravan and camping show was on in Sydney so we shot up there via the ...

... tuleb kirju pildi seast midagi v2lja valida.
