    We arrived in Suzhou under half hour and were immediately enveloped in a smog of dust and smell of chemicals. Coming out of the train station I felt the air was filled with heavy smoke. Vicky, our guide, said that for all its ancient beauty, the town is also an industrial center with several manufacturing factories emitting toxic waste in the environment.

    Today is our last full day in mainland China and we are going to Suzhou on the fast train. We met Andrew in the metro at an arranged station then proceeded to the high speed railway network.     I visited Tongli on Christmas day. There was not many tourist around. It was very enjoyable. You actually have to pay a fee to get within the town. It's a bit expensive (10) but I think it is worth it because then you can get into every house and garden with that ticket and you get to see a lot more than if you had to pay for each site individually.
