... us on shoulder-less, high traffic roads - the equivalent of Barbur Boulevard (in Portland) without bike lanes. We made it safely to Dese and reconnected with our route, but wow, what an adrenalin rush! Ironically, our detour knocked 5k off our route. Others in our group didn't fare so well when they got lost too and doubled back a couple of times. They rode 63k yesterday! This was by far the most difficult day ...

... Wow, talk about an introduction to Venice, as we cruised down the Canal Grande we looked and pointed at more beautiful architecture and lovely balconies. The canal was alive with vapretto, traghettos and gondalas transporting thousands of snap happy tourists to their Veneto accommodation. We considered fishing but with a hefty €50 price tag for the permit we instead hired a rowing boat and paddled out to the island monastery. On the way back we floated around whilst eating our boat picnic. Soaking it all up. Swim is a possibility but the ambient temperature has dipped somewhat (thank god we didn't ditch the duvet!) so maybe a big toe or two will suffice.

... point. When I got on the earlier bus it struck me that I had in fact done exactly the same thing as yesterday, walked the streets of Venice for about 4.5 hours. I got back to my room feeling very cold and very tired so I had a lovely hot bath and a siesta. However the siesta lasted until after 8 p.m. and that was far too late to start getting ready to go out. So I've opted for an early night and an earlier start tomorrow. Let's see if I make it to the recommended restaurant tomorrow!
