... the bus (3 hour journey) to the town near where we were booked in for two nights. We arrived in the town, Chania, to discover there were no buses to anywhere near our hotel and we would have to catch a taxi. To complicate matters, Mark discovered that we had lost the credit card. Big Bugger. We managed to scrape together enough cash to pay for the taxi to our apartment / hotel room, which was LOVELY, but unfortunately in the MIDDLE OF NOWHERE! No cafes, no ...
Crete, Greece markandnoma2009... local sausages from Rethmyio rounded out our meal. After some false starts looking for the bus station, we had a hot slow bus trip out to Knossos, the vast Minoan palace excavated and somewhat Disnified by Arthur Evans in the 1900s. That palace dates from 1700-1400 BC and is a large structure of 1300 rooms. The palace is known for its frescoes, labyrinthian ways, Minoan columns, and frescoes. It also contains the earliest ...
Heraklion, Crete, Greece nsadventures... any discount for pensioners unless you're over 65), and we were greeted by a guide – Eva – she suggested that we would benefit from her services. She was right, without her knowledge and panache it could have been just another pile of rocks. It is a palace of the Minoan civilization that pre-dated the Greeks and ruled the Mediterranean with the world’s first navy. The myths about the Minoans (Minotaur, labyrinth) were probably inventions of ...

Agia Pelagia, Crete, Greece belphoebe... ago whemn it said it was still delayed! So we rushed towards our gate (of course first through security) and me making some impressive acrobatic moves trying not to fall with my slippery flipflops on the marble stones. But we made it and are now on our way to Crete! I think that's all for now. Oh I just spend £2,- on a cup of tea! How expensive can it be?!

Holly
Heraklion, Crete, Greece belphoebeWent out to dinner last night. Nicky & Graham had given us a lovely card which us a great trip and £40! for us to spend so that we at least are able to go to dinner once - so that's what we did. We walked down to town. It's a pretty place build around teh bay with here and there a fisher's boat resting in the sea. Seeing all the restaurants we were afraid (well that's not really the right word but you know what I mean) of being hassled by every restaurand emplyee ...
Agia Pelagia, Crete, Greece belphoebe... exhausted on our bed.

Being so very hot we changed into our bikinis and with our big bags of this and that -books, puzzles, Lonely Planet, paper, pen, iPod etc- we went down to the swimming pool. How come it's so difficult to find the courage to just into the pool?? Sitting on the edge with your legs dangling in the water is one thing, but to make the jump is quite another feet..

Holly
Agia Pelagia, Crete, Greece belphoebe... Eve is more determined and says firmly 'no'. Despite that they are helpful pointing out the bus stop. We travel by bus to Heraklion center - buying a postcard for Tini and myself and thereby picking up the courage to aks the shop girl which bus we should take to Agia Pelagia. After discussing it with granddad she sent us along the road to the port bus station ...
Agia Pelagia, Crete, Greece belphoebe... was difficult and mentally draining. I would pick up the odd Dutch word common with old Scots language and use these language similarities to try and piece each conversation together, but in vain. It was impossible to take part in any discussion. So I resigned myself to cleaning the same spots over and over again, trying to look too busy to distract myself from my work - my perfect excuse not to look like a spare part. I was quite happy doing this, until Nikki told me off for ...
