Started early out of Invermere on our way to Lake Louise. Entering the Kootenay National Park the scenery is amazing from the start. A narrow slot canyon. We started out at 7:30 am so the road was all ours. Beautiful mountains on both sides.

... mountains at some distance. Some of the peaks we saw were 3315m, 3329m, 3470m, 3747m – that was Mt. Columbia the highest point in Alberta. Sorry about providing the heights in meters but I have exceeded my internet limits and get charged $10 every time I go on line on our MIFI.

By far most of these mountains were bare craggy peaks with little or no forest. Even on those that did have forest cover the timberline was about half way down the mountain so ...

We continued heading into the park. Sadly much of the park was shut off, a large forest fire is burning in the Maligne Lake area. It's not as bad as it has been, helped by the rain the other day, but still bad enough that helicopters shuttle back and forth from town to the fire carrying buckets of fire retardant under them to drop on the fire.

So our options as to what we could do in the park were limited ...
