1741. The Underwater Village

... beautiful reservoir to walk along. Nice place to soak in the beauty and think back on all that I've experienced on this Alpine adventure. An adventure that is probably soon going to come to an end. And then... my second surprise of the day. Is that... a clock tower coming up from the middle of the lake? As I get closer, I can see that it's a church tower, rising up from the waters, blending in beautifully with the surroundings. Later I ...

... highlands of Nauders, my final town here in Austria. It's kind of a surreal feel, after hours of nearly impenetrable cliffs and fierce river gorges--thinking I'd left all land suitable for human life behind--to find a peaceful idyllic landscape high up on the mountains--a Shangri-La of sorts. I fix my gaze on the narrowing valley up ahead and continue down the ...

Day 283 4 hrs, 8 kms Strengen has a peculiar landmark: a covered bridge that looks like a bunch of random pieces of lumber attached together, all crooked, looking like it could fall over at any time. Just seems really out of place here in Austria where everything it seems is made to perfection. Does look pretty cool ...

... the top of the cliff, having to backtrack into town. Another trail climbs, high, high up through the village and into the forest beyond. A jolly farmer offers me a ride on his tractor... but no... can't do that. Then after a short walk, the trail starts to zigzag down to the road again, not far from where I started. I figure I'll just walk along the road for a while. Can't win 'em ...
